Is this a large or small 8 variety? I've seen so-called pictures of both but they all look the same to me.

@MachinMachinMan There are 3 types of 8 . The small is a normal 8 with the traditional figure of 8 pattern. The large 8 or sometimes called the fat 8 doesn't have a figure of 8 it has a bar across the centre of the 8. The third type is a hybrid with a fat 8 originally struck with a thin small 8 struck over the top.

I would assume the underlying fat 8 was either broken or damaged and whoever did the repair picked the wrong style 8 to repunch over it. Below are the 3 examples.
