Historical Note:

A Hawaii overprint note is one of a series of banknotes (one silver certificate and three Federal Reserve Notes) issued during World War II as an emergency issue after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent of the overprints was to easily distinguish US currency captured by Japanese forces in the event of an invasion of Hawaii and render the bills worthless.

I wish I knew the history, I'm intrigued as well. This note came to me from someone trying to sell it, I didn't pay much for it at all.

It's a shame this keepsake has been separated from its origin. Because of condition, most of the value would have been sentimental value.

Perhaps the note was carried back to the mainland by a service man stationed in Hawaii.
My father's note probably was brought back by his brother.
