ANA first steam press medal, off center
I got this from the
ANA's monthly YN (young numismatist) auction in google classroom. You can get
ANA currency called YN dollars for completing fun coin activities. After I found out that I can't use my YN dollars after I turn 18 (because that's the age I'm no longer a YN), I realized that I had to use it quickly. I kept an eye out for a coin that looked interesting and this medal caught my eye. It was a dramatic off center piece, so I decided to bid on this medal. For context every month, the
ANA has an auction in google classroom for YNs that has 3-4 lots you can bid; this medal was lot#2. The other lots were: 2014-S silver proof
Kennedy half dollar, 1941 Netherland east indies 1/4 gulden, and a 2024 1/1000 Troy OZ South Dakota goldback.
I bid strategically to get this medal. Since this was a "silent" format auction that lasted 14 days, the top bid only updated every ~5 days. I placed a low first bid, baiting others to bid low. On the last day, right after the top bid updated, I placed my final bid of $242YN. I put the two in the end as a safeguard against people who might try to win the auction by a dollar.
In the end, I won the most popular lot (Over 25 bids). It was also the second cheapest lot (I believe that was caused by my early low bid). I found out later that the steam press displayed at the
ANA money museum struck this medal. Also wanted to add, the diameter of this medal is 27mm, so it's a pretty big off center piece. This medal also has some minor
Machine Doubling on the reverse. I know it doesn't add any value, but I think it adds a nice unique charm to the medal.
