1928 Peace Dollar Value - Coin Community Forum

timras14 Valued Member United States 273 Posts	Posted 04/16/2020 01:31 am Does anyone know why the 1928 Peace dollar has dropped off in value so much? Graded XF45 in 2007 this coin was worth $560. Now the same grade is worth $250. I understand that coin values fluctuate, or values may go up and down if more of a certain grade are getting submitted.... but why did the value drop over 50%? Another factor was the strong stock market during the the first three years of this administration, which drew money away from the hobby as well. Report this Post to the Staff

In 2014 I paid $599 for a MS 62 1928 and sold it in 2020 for $400 at market value, so I lost 33%. I sold an entire set of Peace dollars in 2020 and the trend of Peace dollars has been going down as with most collectible coins. When I sold the set, the biggest lose on an individual coin was on the 1928. From the time I finished the set in 2014 and sold in 2020, I lost 17.7%. While in agreement with a few of the above, I would add that there are the occasional series that skyrocket in value over a relatively short period of time only to likewise fall in similar fashion at some point. Comparatively, I think the market is currently witnessing the same with moderns. Specifically the higher grade Washington quarters, Kennedy halves and Eisenhower dollars. Why this occurs with such a wide variance in high/low value would be anyone's guess. Popularity? Purchased as a hedge against inflation? The reasons are many. What I do know is that I've assembled all but the mentioned 1928 and 1934s in MS64/65 while the market is at a low point. Not that I'm looking at it from a profit standpoint, rather a collectible. This method frees up funds for other series and thereby shortening time of completion for each when on a budget. Sometimes one should collect what they like and not worry about future value. Remember we are but caretakers of our coins they will here after we are gone. In 100 years the chances are good that they will be worth much more than what we paid. Today's pricing is approaching more realistic valuations. That said, gem specimens always deserve hefty premiums. Report this Post to the Staff
