@jimbucks

They're nuts. That's no 61. If it is, I'll take a dozen of them. I've seen undergraded coins before, but this one is so far off it's hard to comprehend.

The coin up close is probably correctly graded - the stock photo is the problem. PCGS enhances their stock photos for unknown reasons - seen it many times. This is an egregious example that serves no one well.

My question now becomes what photos more truly represent the actual appearance of the coin?

My guess it is somewhere in between the PCGS photos on their site and your posted photo here.

Just more proof that ....."They who control the camera and the software can control the outcome of the photograph!"

The Heritage listing shows two sets of photographs. The Heritage photos are by far the best and the most honest in determining the surface conditions. The PCGS Tru view and the most recent photograph provided by the OP mask the hairlines. We are all trying to grade these coins by photographs but a lot of sharp coin scouts and dealers have viewed this coin in hand and that is why it is still in a 61 holder IMO.

No question the PCGS pic is deceptive, and I've seen this many times. Not sure why they think this is a smart idea.

I have not seen the coin in hand. When I receive it I will post pics. I hope for the best. Paid $1920 which I think is fair.

I enlarged and enhanced the obverse photo of the coin in the slab. I see die polishing marks, toning, and a beautiful coin. I still don't see anything that would make this a 61.

I'll look forward to the photos after it arrives.

PCGS has professional graders, but they aren't infallible. They usually are close. I don't think this is one of those times.

That is the best looking Seated dollar I have seen. Love the toning. I'm surprised it not graded higher

I didn't offer an opinion on this one; it had me confused.

I thought I could see a thinning of the rather nice patina on the high points, that could be seen as wear, down to AU-58.
On the other hand, the fields appear almost pristine, and consistent with a much higher grade.
Either way, I figured that I was going to be wrong.

Nevertheless, I don't agree with PR-61, either.
In retrospect, I tend to agree with other opinions expressed in this thread.

Definitely worth the risk to crack out for a higher grade than PR-61. Big money involved here.

The photos are simply shopped and deceptive. This is a common problem with PCGS hyped-up pics. You can bet your booty that the coin in hand is littered with issues.

If you access the PCGS or Heritage archives you can pull this coin up. Enlarge the photographs provided by Heritage. There are two sets of photographs. In one set you can clearly see the hairlines across liberty and in the right field. This coin is maxed out at a 61.
This coin was sold by Stacks in 1995, Heritage in 2015 and most recently by David Lawrence. These three firms and the many knowledgeable numismatists who viewed the coin in hand or at auction lot viewing are not going to pass on a coin of this type where an upgrade can be financially rewarding.

Dealers do not like leaving money on the table! If there were any chance at an upgrade it would have happened long ago!
