it is always difficult to identify these anonymous coins .The weight is important .The coin has not been cast as the very early .
First possibility : Cr 56/3 : the weight standard declined to 40.5 gr for an as , so a semis about 20 gr ,the best is look for photos and compare the reverse ; the prow and the superstructure
CR 106/5 : mark staff and club : on the reverse after the S , there is maybe a line ( the points) representing a staff , the average weight here for an as is 39 gr . On your 3th photo , it seems to be a staff (cr106)or a decoration of the superstructure of the prow (cr 56 ) .
Looking the photos , for me it is one of this , but with the coin in hand , you remarks maybe something else .albert

Thanks so much, antwerpen2306! The reverse lacks the staff under the S as in CF 106/5. I examined all the photos for both CR 106/5 and CR 56/3 and my coin matches exactly two examples of CR 56/3, specifically the coin in the last row, far left, on page 1, and the very last coin on page 4. However, both of those examples weigh about 8g less than mine. Is that unusual? Edited by CollegeBarbers

No , I don t think so , problem with these early coins is often the weight . Crawford writes in RRC,p 159 for this coin : The weight standard of 2-8 (as to semuncia) is based initially on an as of about 54 gr and gradually declines to the level at wich nos 50/3-8,57/3-8 : average of as of 36 gr and 43 gr .I have the same problem with all my coins of this period , except the denarius . It is very difficult to find a match with Crawford because his descriptions are all the same and the photos in his book are not the best .I give a reference to the edition of Crawford in one of my posts a few weeks ago . albert

Interesting. As much of a challenge as it is, I also enjoy the detective work that goes into identifying ancients. These few coins have really given me a bug to learn more about this branch of numismatics!  And I'm thrilled to finally have a positive ID for this semis! Thank you again Albert!  |
