Hello everyone, For fathers day, I want to get my dad a cool set of coins. I came across the Presidential golden Dollars (2007-2016) and it caught my eye as a seemingly cool gift idea. However, I don't really know how to gauge if these coins are more of a gimmick or something of actual value worth gifting to a coin collector. I see words thrown around like uncirculated, US Mint, golden color, ect. What should I be looking for or staying away from? Are these worth buying? For around $100 do you have another coin set you'd recommended instead? Here is the specific link to the set I am thinking about buying for him. I like John1's idea - How about buying him a U.S. Mint Proof set from his birth year! Nice way to honor him. The price would/should be much less than $100.00 but the meaning would be so much more.
Then, take him out to do an activity you know he would enjoy (Covid-19 permitting).

I wouldn't buy them BUT it's not for us you are buying. The issue with any collection in a case is that to a collector they aren't generally worth it as we buy the coins. Paying extra for the case/display isn't generally something that a collector wants. BUT if your father likes the coins and presentation, I could see buying it. Either way it's a nice gift.

If he's a collector what does he collect? For $100 you can get a whole lot of different coins really, likely something he doesn't have and would like to have to fill a spot in his collection. I mean like apex for instance you could get a 50 coin roll or average circulated Roosevelt dimes or Mercury dimes, or a BU roll of Roosevelt dimes for him to search through and then have the extras to sell or trade for others and that could be done for under $100. Or just a single coin of a better date he needs from a local coin shop. You couldalso check about a girt certificatell to your local coin shop so he could get what he wants/needs if it's hard to tell what he's working on at the moment. |

Thanks for the input everyone! I am not going to get the presidential coin set. I'm now thinking about getting him some silver dollars which he seems to be picking up a lot of lately.
