Another coin arrived by mail today featuring an Italian composer: a 2 Euro coin from San Marino commemorating Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). Puccini is mostly know for his melodramatic operas in which the female protagonist typically dies at the end. For that, he was (and is) often accused of being a misogynist. However, Puccini is also known for composing beautiful arias such as the memorable "Nessun Dorma".
DDR, 10 Mark, 1979, Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) commemorative.
Carl was was a German composer, conductor, virtuoso pianist, guitarist, and critic who was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic era. He is best known for his opera Der Freischütz. The opera is about marksman Max who, having a dry spell with his rifle, enters into a pact with the devil so that he is able to cast six magic bullets that will always hit their mark. This is quite convenient as he will be participating in an upcoming shooting contest where the love of his life, Agathe, is the prize. Of course, the devil is in the details as the seventh bullet belongs to... you know who.
This guy doesn't really need any introduction: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) featured on a 1970 East Germany 10 Mark coin, commemorating his 200th birthyear.

Austria, 1982, 20 Schilling. Commemorating the 250th birthyear of Joseph Haydn. I already had the 2 Schilling coin from 1932 which I posted upthread. Thought that this new coin would make a nice complement.
Got two more Austrian coins I bought from Bob Reis. A 1930 2 Schilling coin commemorating Walther von der Vogelweide (ca 1170-1230) and a 1931 2 Schilling coin commemorating Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791).
Walther von der Vogelweide was a Minnesänger, a German version of the better known Troubadour, who wrote lyrical poetry and music in the tradition of courtly love in the High Middle Ages. Not much of his poetry and melodies has survived, the most complete being the Palästinalied.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is probably the most famous composer of all time and doesn't need an introduction. He composed more than 800 works of virtually every genre.

A new coin from the former Eastern Germany: a 1984 20 Mark coin commemorating Georg Frideric Handel (1685-1759). He was a German-British Baroque composer well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. Two of his most popular pieces are the Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks.
Got the last coin in the mail today from Ukraine featuring Ukrainian composers. This time the coin commemorates Dmytro Bortnianskyi (1751-1825), a composer, harpsichordist and conductor. He composed operas, choral, symphonic, chamber and instrumental works, in which musical themes from Ukrainian folk songs are reflected. He was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, wich may sound familiar when you listen to his music.
