I came across this 1941 Wheat penny and at first I thought it was just worn or dirty. But it has a strange, gritty texture and it's not dirty as far as I can tell. Is it just worn or could it be a lamination error? I took pics with the flash on and off. Any info is appreciated.

Metal detecting find most likely. Looks like my 1912-S LWC which I posted on here last night.

Right, looks like a dug coin. Just a spender.

Extreme environmental damage--could have been in ground for a period of time, in close proximity to a fire, perhaps an acidic setting. Perhaps all three or any two.

I dig them up like that often. I think that they also corrode faster if the metal mix isn't right because of the different dielectrics of the incorrectly separated pure metals touching allows reaction.
