That is a plus when you grow older. All the old jokes are new to younger ones.

Ok I got the new microscope and it doesn't work. It is my computer. Tried another PC and both work, go figure.

Anyhow, I am beginning to think it very well could be plated. It just does not have the silver 'ring' at all.

I will compare one after the other

Normal first

Suspect second...

So I know I am not good at cameras but it can be seen that there is 'something' on the surface. It is a bit heavy, so the plating could account for it. Still I think a 64 would still have that distinctive ring to it...this one does NOT and sticks to a magnet. Others have stated that some materials could cause the strong magnet to stick, and to be frank I just do not know what it is. I must soon return it so I wanted to get some pictures.

I guess this is unsolved at this point, but the experts seem to think it is plated and I can not refute it.

One last one

OK I You Tubed how to do a SG test and I have the scales..
After a few tests, I came up with what worked for the known 64.

After-Years---I-Have-What-I-Know-To-Be-A-Fake-1964-P-Kennedy-Half-Dollar

0.13g - String in Water

Real 1.32 ,1.19
12.6g =10.5882

Plated 1.42, 1.29
12.8g =9.9225

10.58 vs 9.92

So it is close..

Sure looks plated from those last couple pictures. Looks almost zinc plated with how it's slightly bubbled in the picture that says God and part of the date.

You might want to get an XRF reading on it.

"Possibly" Platinum plated. You can get those on ebay. It could stick to a neodymium magnet if it's ferroplatinum, or has some nickel in it.

If you're not that worried about how the coin looks, put a drop of bleach on it. The sodium hypochlorite will tarnish silver very quick (surface tarnish). If you used a drop of hydrochloric "muriatic acid", it would dissolve other platings like Tin.

Or rub the edge of the coin on a piece of paper and see what color streak it leaves. Different colored streaks can let you know what it might be plated with. Tin, nickel etc. I was trying to find the link I had for the different color streaks over at the goldrefiningforum, but can't seem to locate it at the moment.

Sorry it is no longer in my possession. The general thought was plated.

I still would have liked to have it but at least I had it in hand for a while.

* Been gone a while *
