I'm a newbie at coin variety/error collecting. My wife emptied her piggie bank and let me examine the coins. One of them is this Lincoln Penny with a notable depression around the OBV and REV perimeters. Is this what is termed a Capped Die Error? How rare is this?

Not a die cap but probably a Ridge Ring caused from Die Deterioration. This is what a real capped die is. http://www.error-ref.com/reverse-die-cap/

That website is a great resource for all sorts of errors.

I agree it is from Die Deterioration but I believe a Ridge Ring is only raised, not recessed like the perimeter of this coin. So I'm not sure what the actual term might be.

Thanks Pete, John And Jose. Great to know all these types of abnormalities as I continue to collect variety and error coins.
