It is not a penny it is a cent.
In 1888 in Newfoundland pennies circulated alongside cents.
This 1888 gold Newfoundland $2 coin shows the relative value of each.

The penny/cent issue is an interesting one @DBM - could you expand? If I understand correctly, the NFLD $2 establishes a strict relationship between that currency and the English currency of the time, where our cent is roughly equal to their half-penny. I'd never thought of it this way before.... Is the use of 'penny' to describe Canadian currency colloquial in that sense?
