The United States Mint released the End of WWII 75th Anniversary American Eagle 2020 One Ounce Gold Proof Coin (20XE) and End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Silver Proof Coin (20XF) at noon ET on November 5. Because of extremely high demand and the low sales limit of 1,945 units, 20XE became unavailable at 12:05 p.m. Likewise, due to extremely high demand and a sales limit of 75,000 units, 20XF became unavailable at 1:41 p.m. This coin's release resulted in the highest website traffic we have seen to date, with the first hour more than 390,000 users already on the site at the time sales opened and double the predicted number of telephone calls coming into our call center.
The End of WWII 75th Anniversary 24-Karat Gold Coin (20XG) and End of World War II 75th Anniversary Silver Medal (20XH) was released for sale at noon ET on November 9. Because of extremely high demand and the low sales limit of 7,500 units, 20XG became unavailable at 12:43 p.m. Likewise, due to extremely high demand and a sales limit of 20,000 units, 20XH became unavailable at 12:33 p.m. This coin's release resulted in unusually high website traffic, with more than 130,000 users on the site within the first hour and double the predicted number of telephone calls coming into our call center.
Once you add an item to your online shopping bag, inventory is not allocated to your order until you complete the checkout process. If the product sells out or becomes unavailable while the product is in your bag and your order is still pending, a coin will not be available when you subsequently attempt to complete the checkout process, as occurred in your case.
Should additional inventory become available through order cancellations, the coin will again become available for purchase. To receive a notification if and when it does go back on sale, visit our website, locate the product page, and click the "REMIND ME" button to provide your email address. If you receive an email notification but are unable to place an order, you will need to sign up again with the REMIND ME button to receive another email notification later (depending on inventory availability).
The U.S. Mint continues to recommend that customers use our website as a "registered customer" to place orders for high-demand products. This is the fastest and most efficient way to place an order.
We thank you for supporting our numismatic programs and hope this information is helpful.

I'm thinking next time I'm at the supermarket, if the person in line behind me has something nice in their cart, I'll just reach in their cart and put it in mine and tell them "this item is currently unavailable".
Thanks for posting the email @Corbe! Funny, no mention of people getting "banned" or the Cloudfare issues everyone encountered. I'm a little surprised the silver ASE coin lasted 1hr 41min but then again not really since 99% of the 390k users were stuck refreshing.

75000/105 minutes = their system can only push about 700 sales a minute. So 1945 gold + say another 1945 silver = 3900 / 700 = 5-6 minutes (which is how fast the V75 AGE sold out).
It has since updated and now both silver eagles are in their possession. One shows departed (Memphis) regional facility and the other shows it arrived at a different facility 2 hours later after the other ones shows having departed Memphis. I can only assume they are on the same truck since they're both going to the same destination city and the tracking system is not perfect.

I sent an email to the mint complaining about Cloudflare regarding trying to get the gold coin on Monday and got the same canned email response. I'm guessing they have no answer for Cloudflare which is why that was omitted and is hopefully addressed by next week (I will try for the uncirculated AGE). If they want to assign a winner/loser tag it's one thing, but then tell us that so we know if we should give up or maybe have a better system of picking winners. The CF software should only be trying to kick out obvious bots or slow down the refreshes to prevent a complete slowdown like I've seen it used for on other sites to prevent a DOS attack. If they want to assign winners/losers, then they need to do a virtual waiting room or a lottery.
Personally, I liked the Nike system (if they still do this method) of placing an order within a time window including payment info to show you're serious and the system would pick which orders to fill after a cutoff time (you could also tweak it so repeat customers have more weight in the lottery). I'm sure Nike has a bigger IT budget, but can't see why this is not possible with the mint either.
I, for one, am not a fan of the mint changing its sale/resale strategies. I had a 100% record of getting these low-mintage releases until the last 2 offerings
On a side note, can anyone who has already opened their ASE please confirm whether it has a numbered COA? I'm still wondering whether I should open mine or not, and it didn't say there was a numbered one on the website, but I'd like to be sure...
