Is it cheaper to buy mint sets 2 or 3 years later on the numismatic after market, instead of as new product?

Well I don't know what the original prices were from the mint but the 2018 sets are selling in the $26 - $35 range, the 2017 seems to be around $38, the 2016 in the low $40's, the 2015 low $30's, 2014 low $30's, 2013 high $20's, 2012 low $50's, 2011 mid $20's. The 2012 is an oddity, they cut off sales early that year. The mintages isn't really that much lower (In fact it is higher than recent sets) but the sudden cut off created a high demand for the sets that still hasn't gone away. It's a psychological thing.

When comparing the return on investment for mint sets, I think you also need to consider the number of coins, the total face value of the coins and inflation. Take 2015 for example. The sets were issued at $28.95. There were 28 coins with a total face value of $13.82. If they're selling in the low $30 range now on ebay, then once you consider ebay markup or a dealer buying them directly (typically 10% to 15% below greysheet), then there would be basically no return. It's clear when you look back that the number of people collecting these sets has collapsed over the past ten or fifteen years. Will that continue to happen? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised given that younger people are using electronic payments more often than not and what they're being taught is not painting US history in a good light. Most simply don't have the emotional attachment to coins that someone my age (51) might have due to handling coins. In general, I would not buy mint sets hoping for a return on investment. That said, I'm a collector. I want them now and don't want to wait two or three years in the hope that the set might go down a few bucks. We're only on this Earth once. I figure there's a lot to be said for enjoying them now. All that brings us to the 2020 mint set. Sales as of 12/06/20 were 191,076. Sales as of 12/13/20 were 206,496. Since the production limit is supposed to be only 213,000, it doesn't take a genius to figure out these are going to sell out in the next week or two. The production this low has not happened since 1961 which saw 223,704 sets produced. That set only has 10 coins with a total face value of $1.82 and currently sells in the $50 range. That was a long time ago though. All in all, I think this set will be a winner, especially when those not paying attention find out that they're no longer available. Oddly, there are people currently buying these sets on ebay in the mid $30's. It does make you wonder. I just bought 50 sets. I'll let y'all know in a couple of years how it works out.

I buy the mint set from the mint to have coins that haven't been looked at by other people. generally speaking, a couple years later they have been looked at and sold and I'd rather take the gamble on one from the mint directly then know I've got one someone else looked at and decided "yeah, I'ma sell it"

"Departed USPS Regional Facility" Now I have three items on the way. Two USPS, one UPS. The other two have been in limbo since last week, somewhere in transit.

Whoa! While my Mayflower set took a detour to California and my new Ike is "in transit," the mint set made it to the local PO today! I should get it tomorrow.

The sets I've see so far have very impressive 2020-D half dollars.
Just wished they had not have pulled the plug on the bonus "W" nickel.

I have my set! I happened to be looking out the windows when the carrier came. Waited for her to pass a safe distance before rushing out to get it. Only piece of mail in my box today.
