Thanks, I went a bit overboard there as 1990 was such a huge year. The next time I will go bananas like that will be in 1967.

Final facts, some 40 million $1 and 30 million $2 were minted, and the $1 and $2 notes were printed in Whangarei from 1980 to late 1990 along with $5 to $100. This changed when the workers were all laid off and the new series 5 notes were printed in Australia!

My Australian for 1990 is a bit more modest but also interesting.

Heads of 1 cent, $2, 10c and 5c

And tails

The last 1 cent coins for circulation were issued in 1990 and I have 1 of the 55 million minted (Low by 1c standards). No 2c, 20c, 50c or $1 were minted, so like 92 - this is all that came out of the mints for everyday use.

The cent is a bit worn but okay, the $2 is a stunner and likely lifted from a set and the 10c and 5c are standard high grade specimens.

Tomorrow we hit the 80s, my favourite decade and a time of reliable and continual issuing of coins for circulation.

I probably got these in change in 1999, as that was my first visit to NZ since 1974, when I went there on holiday with my parents and elder brother.

My first post for 89, more coming.

This year 4 large dollar coins were issued instead of 1 or 2, the one showing Athletics was issued with usual sets.

This was the sold set, and the last sold item I will be showing, everything else is owned by me now. It was the first year with no 1c or 2c coins in the sets and the cardboard sleeve was used instead of the old plastic/vinyl wallets used since 1969.

I also have these 4 silver dollars issued in this nice case

They are sterling silver and are stunning, its the beginning of at least 1 NZ NCLT coin each year for at least the next 20 years. You will love them.

At the time in 1989, coin sets were being more commercialised, until 1988 it was the one special $1 coin per year (Maybe 2 if you were lucky) and 1 set of coins, either Proof or UNC standard. After 1988, this changed and by the mid 1990s we had an explosion of NCLT tatt.

1989 was the first big year for circulation coins in NZ since 1999/2000 basically with all of the 4(!!) coins except the 50 cents being minted.

It is the first year we have reached in which all of the coins are obselete now and have no value beyond collecting. Also we are back to the "Kiwi" design 20 cents being pre $1 and $2 coins.

Many of the coins from this point backwards are more worn and as you can see, many 1989 dated coins were the latest in use right up to 2000 for some denominations and hence are heavily worn.

1989 in Australia was a sad year too, unlike NZ in the late 1980s which saw high numbers of coins issued, apart from 1988, most of the 1985 - 1990 period was dominated by the 20c, 50c and $1 being not available and even limited numbers of 2 cent coins!!

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

The original shot, I thought was too dark, so I tried a brown background, although hardly studio quality I hope you have noticed a gradual improvement in photo quality compared to post 2004 coins I photographed.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

The second shot, I think brings out the bronze coins better. This was the last big year for 1c and 2c mintages as circulating pieces, 1990 saw an issue of 1c, and 1991 the set only, after that the 5 cent was the new low value.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

The 5c and 10c was in generous numbers and the $2 was a highish (31 million) 2nd year issue, again I can show you an essentially uncirculated coin unlike the rest of these. The 1c and 2c are generallty shiny as they circulated for a short time before withdrawal (And were hand picked from 6 or 7 candidates for 1989).

Well that is 1989 for me, a year of bad music and bad hair along with the peak of Stock Aitken Waterman pap and rubbish like Bros and New Kids on the Block. Even Prince's 1989 Batman album was lame in comparison.

Next are 1988 and 1987 two of my favourite years with some killer coins to show

Love it, they were the happy games of January 1990 in Auckland, back then I was in Christchurch though. Remember an excruciating song they made called "This is the moment" with such lyrics as

"This is the moment, we are together, beating as one big family, the spirit of venue, let it surround, hearing our voices - HAERE MAI!!" Aarghh! its awful.

They celebrated this is in late 1989 so they could roll on the Sesqui celebrations for 1990. A set of stamps for the same games was issued in October 1989 and this was timed in with the coin releases.

NZ hosted the Commonwealth games in 1950 at Auckland (As the Empire Games then) and in 1974 at Christchurch, which as we will see, also bought a flurry of coin and stamp issues.

Welcome to 1988 - a new feature I will be adding is Kiwi large dollar of the day. These huge slab like coins were issued between 1967 and 1989 (Except in 1968) and came in sets or as loose proof coins and these uncirculated coins in plastic cases and collars. If I can I will show the coin in its plastic collar.

1988 was the Yellow eyed Penguin (Hoiho) it appears on the $5 note too. This coin had a mintage of 45k.

These uncirculated dollars were cupronickel and cost around $5 to $15 brand new. Mainly sold as souvenirs, I was lucky to get one in this shape, many are found smeared with cloudy and damaged cases.

1988 was the first year no 1c or 2c coins were released for circulation, but they appeared in 1988 sets.

All the other coins were issued meaning the 5c to 50c. I don't have a 50c, but do the others.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
I was lucky to find some nice circulation examples, the 20c is very nice (Not verdigris stained like 1989) and some late 1980s coins lasted through to 2006 with very little wear

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
I decided to add the dollar here to give you all some idea of how huge it was. They were legal tender, but did not circulate (Seems pointless if you paid $10 or $20 to get it).

Australia in 1988 had several bicentennial coins including a silver $10 one, the Kanga dollar and 50c Steve showed and also this thing.

Back with effigy of Queen.

Whereas all the other coins looked backwards, this one looked forward with new Parliament house. 3 million were minted and they were sold through banks at face value. The condition of this one, suggests they may have circulated.

Compared to other aluminium bronze coins, these are huge

Also released was the 1988 Bicentenary $10 note.

1988 was also the first year the popular $2 coin was released.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

Inflation had seen the use of the $2 note become expensive and the value quite worthless, so it was decided to reissue the denomination as a coin. But the $1 was already large and Australians did not want an even bigger coin when they already had the oversized and bulky 50c and 20c.

I don't know whose brainwave it was to make it smaller than the $1 and make Australia the laughing stock of the world. But it worked, coins had not been tied to precious metal or weight standards for decades and as long as it was stamped with "$2" on it, then it was worth $2. Also the special milling and thickness would distinguish it from the 2c and 5c coins. By 1988 they probably knew the 2c was on its way out anyway.

The design by Horst Hahne showed the Southern Cross and an Aboriginal elder, based on "One Pound Jimmy" who also appeared on stamps from the 1950s. Until 2012, this was the only design on the denomination.

This meant that between 1988 and 1990, 8 denominations of coins were circulating!

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

The rest of my 1988 includes the 1c, 5c, 10c and Bicentennial dollar, which also had an Aboriginal theme (Yet in 1988 Indigenous Australians were still being treated like dirt).

The 2c and 20c were not issued for circulation (Myths circulate about 180k of 20c pieces that were issued).

I always thought that it was strange that the $1 was larger than the $2, but
then I realised the Yanks have been doing it for years. The Dime (10C), is smaller
then the Nickel (5C).

You can blame the RAM for that, because it shows
200,000 minted that year on their website.

Not sure about the 2c coin. RAM shows more that 28M minted, but mine is from a mint set.
