My bad about 2c, I don't have a circulation one either.

The dime is smaller as up to 1964 it was silver and the nickel had been base metal nickel since 1866, except in WW2 where a silver nickel of about 35% silver circulated in the war years (early 1940s).

In 1965 they switched to cupro nickel and that meant not only was a dime smaller, but it has less metal value as nickels are mostly nickel and US coins of Dime to large Ike dollar are only 8.33% nickel and over 90% copper, hence why their edges are brown and the nickel is merely a coating!

At least here our cupronickel was 25% nickel.

Welcome to 1987, this was a very big year in New Zealand for coins.

It was the last year of 1c and 2c being issued for circulation and large quantities of them were issued (About 40 million of each, approaching Aussie volumes). In 1987 inflation was still raging at 15% a year, so the Reserve bank must have known their days were limited. By this time all you could buy with one cent was a tiny cheap sweet like a mint or smoker (Sherbet pill like hard candy).

A treat for you all - a complete set of 1987 circulation coins. Basically this is all the denominations in circulation between 1967 and 1989.

However I stupidly put the 1986 dated cent in with this group and you will see the 1987 coin with my 1986 ones

The 1c and 2c are fairly nice as they were only used for a couple of years. Most 1987 dated bronze has at least some lustre left. Posting these coins brings back warm memories, we are now back to me being just 11 years old and a 50c coin was a big deal to me then.

Only the 50c was less common, with 3.6 million issued, much less than mintages in 1986 and 1988 but way more than 1984.

And continuing on with the other tradition, I would never have seen these in 1987 myself. Not until about 1994 at least when I started assembling large Kiwi dollars in a collection.

The annual large dollar coin was for the centenary of our National Parks, after the USA, NZ was one of the earliest countries to have one when a Maori chief, Te Heu heu Tukino, the paramount chief (ariki nui) of the Ngati Tuwharetoa gifted Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngaruahoe to the nation - the 3 big central North Island volcanoes, in 1887.

Until 1987 they and 9 other National Parks were managed by the Parks and Nature Ministry but in 1987 the Department of Conservation (DOC) was set up and the this beautiful coin celebrates it.

Like in 1989, a godawful song was released called "Parks for people, people in parks" and such lines "Feel the beating of the nations heart, reach up and touch the sky"

The 80s was the decade of making cheesy songs over every little thing, 1986 was worse with "Sailing Away" about the America's cup - no wonder we lost it that year!

Australia in 1987 frustrated me with how many coins they did not issue let alone they did. I bit the bullet and bought a BU set and it was the only cheapish one of the era.

It helps as it has coins like the $1, 50c and 20c not issued in the wild for yonks at that stage.

A nice set and decent photograph

We are now in the era of no $2 coins and the $1 is the highest. The set was quite nice with a historical essay on Proclaimation era coins.

I mentioned back in "94" my next 20cent would be mid 80s and none of you suspected it would be 87 rather than 85 or 82. I don't have an 85. Even the 2c was not released in 1987.

Circulation coins not surprisingly are limited for me!

There is 2 I have the 5c and 1c and that is 1 more than 1986!!And again I have them all. The rest are all mint set only, thank God I have a mint set and NZ issued so much or this would have been one boring year!

Forgot to post anything yesterday for 1988 - had a busy day catching up with old friends and making zoom and Skype calls...

I have both the Kiwi and Aussie uncirculated sets for 1987. Princetane has already posted the Australian set, so here's the New Zealand one with the National Parks dollar:

Lovely NumisRob, noticed the sellotape where the dollar is.

Thatw as common as the plastic was not strong enough to handle the huge dollar coins. I love that velour/velvety stuff on the cover too.

Just because I show something, does not mean no one else can - its cool when we all collect the same stuff. I used to have all the UNC sets of NZ, now just a few sadly.

Those last few years of those sets, they put more effort into the presentation with data about the subject on the dollar, until 1982 it was just the same list describing the coins.

The only reason I have been on everyday is I basically have no life beyond work and home at the moment. Covid has made me a bit paranoid too.

And the examples are almost as nice as mine.
Bet you can't wait until we reach the age of SILVER and even GOLD coins!

Moving into 1986, I start with Australia for one reason. They issued ONE coin for circulation! That is right, 1986 was the year of "Mint set only" releases.

And the one coin was a commemorative, the 3rd issue of the dollar coin was its first commemorative one. It celebrates the year of Peace which was the UN trope for the year.

My example is pretty naff, so lets hope some one shows a better one.

New Zealand in 1986 saw releases of all the coins except the 2c and 10c for circulation. I have most of them, except the 50 cents.

It was the first year the Raphael Maklouf effigy of the Queen was used, a year later than Australia, which adopted it in 1985. Many other countries adopted it much later. Canada not until 1989 and my Falklands Island set of 1987 only has the Maklouf portrait on the pound. The other coins all still have the Machin one!

All 3 of the coins are in good condition. The eagle eyed of you will notice the 1 cent coin is dated 1987, as I got these mixed up and the 1986 dated 1 cent is in the 1987 photo.

1986 saw the issue of two large dollar coins. The Kakapo dollar was the standard one issued with the Unciruclated and Proof sets, whilst the Royal visit dollar was only sold loosely. This was only the 4th time this had happened (Previously in 1970, 74 and 83).

The Kakapo coin is the nicer of the two, with 35k issued loose and the Royal Visit is very basic but I love that red coloured surround with 40k issued.

The Kakapo coin is slightly more scarce.

When the Queen came here for her 6th visit in April 1986, her popularity had waned, my mother would not let me see here saying she was a rich cow who did not care about us everyday people (She was a socialist and republican), and a Maori activist threw an egg at her (Majesty not my mother).

Needless to say I saw her in 1995 and did not adopt my mother's radical views.
