Beautiful set and very informative. I think this was just when they moved away from the vinyl wallets. My 1987 set is similar except there is a big piece on the Proclaimation coins of 1800 and up to the Holey dollars.
You also must realise apart from the dollar, none of those coins circulated, and that is great.
I love the 3 metal arrangement - Gold, silver and bronze yet all are alloys of base metals!

1985 was an interesting year in New Zealand, the circulation coins were minted in Canada, but set coins in Australia, thus the effigies are different. All of the coins were minted for circulation in 1985, in the case of the 5c and 10c, the first since 1982. I am missing however the 10c and 20c coins (Not rare, just don't have them). You will notice we have the Machin effigy now, but its very flat and the date looks very 1980s style rather than 1960s (The same style exists for 1984 on circulation coins too). The dollar showing the Black Stilt, a very threatened bird then and now, has the classic 1967 style Machin effigy, one way to tell if your coins from 1985 are set pieces or circulation coins. I feel the latter look cheaper and nastier and that style effigy looks almost skeleton like. Not crazy about the mustard colour - puke coloured surround for that coin either

Great - the more the merrier and as we head back further and deeper into the 20th century. 1985 in Australia is an improvement on 1986 and 1987 for circulation pieces, not quite the big issue years of 1982 and backwards but getting there. The 1c, 2c were fairly low issuing numbers (30 or so million vs 100+ million most years), no 1985 5c and trivial numbers of 10c to 50c. The 50c had just 1 million and 2 million of the 20 cents. I do have one of the 2.1 million 10 cent pieces though. Only the dollar with an issue of 96 million would be considered a very common and easy to get piece hence why mine is AU and the other coins are all VF/EF. The dollar was still a new concept and thus more were needed to bed the public in with this coin. My scarce 1985 10 cent coin, found in an accumulation pile of world mix I bought a couple of years ago and no part of my instant collections! 1985 was the first year of the Maklouf effigy in Australia too, one year ahead of New Zealand. Starting tomorrow we can look forward to 19 years of Machin effigies.

1985 Most of my pics from NZ are rubbish, so I won't even bother posting them. A couple of the Aussie pics are not too bad. One Cent 5 Cents and how's this little beauty. 20 cents Steve :)

They are beautiful, especially the 20, is that circulation or set? Steve, bad pictures never stopped me from posting any of my stuff The key is, make sure your coins are so nice that no amount of bad photography can ruin them , works for me! Those horrible effigies on 84 and 85 NZ coins, make it almost impossible to get any nice photos of, they have just no depth. You could say those coins were made on the cheap. Hence my goal to own all the UNC sets by the end of this year.

Princetane, thanks for explaining about the portraits on the 1985 NZ coins - it had always puzzled me! Here are my 1985 10c and 20c coins:

Quote: Steve, bad pictures never stopped me from posting any of my stuff If I had the coins at hand, I could probably re do the pics, but they are all tucked away and the pics are just on file. So many I would like to re do, but it would be a huge job. Here's one just for you... Maybe I could edit it..... Here you go. Any better ? Steve :)

Much better shot than mine, the shallow and badly rendered effigy is to blame rather than your photography skills, which are superb.
At the very least, it will no longer be an issue when we get to 1983 and the deep Machin portrait returns to circulation pieces!

Welcome to 1984, Just completed my photos for the 1980 - 1984 period and the number of coins increases in this period, unlike the later 80s with its mint sets and inflation. The early 80s was the big corporate yuppie period with Campari ads, glistening stars on leather furniture ads, silver bubble, inflation, coins and stamp investment mania, perms, the last few pairs of flares, the colour red, synthesisers, Princess Di bobs, yacht rock, Prince and here in AUS/NZ some of the greatest music and bands we ever had, Split Enz, Cold Chisel, Australian Crawl, Icehouse etc... Was not all great though, NZ we were stuck with Muldoon for 9 years who ruined the country and made us a bad imitation of the Soviet Union meets apartheid South Africa. 1984 saw the 1, 2, 20 and 50 c issued for circulation however the 2 larger coins had low mintages of 1 million or so and coins from that year are scarce. The 1c and 2c are a lot more common (Although still the scarcest year of the early 80s in for the 2c, the 1c saw lower numbers in 80 and 82, huge years for the other coins). Examples here are average along with the photo quality sorry. The Dollar coin showed the Chatham Islands Black Robin, which is one of the most endangered birds ever, in 1980 just 1 breeding pair existed and the bird is endemic to Chatham islands, By 2013 this numbert had increased to 250 but like most of NZ's birdlife it is a weak species and liable to attacks by predators. https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/nati...black-robin/Totally safe link to our National Department of Conservation - normally I don't post links, but the story of this little avian fighter is so heart warming

Australia in 1984 saw all the coins issued except the 20 cents in which several million were minted and then melted down - although a crate of coins exists at the mint apparently. It was also the year the $1 coin came out, being the first in the Southern Hemisphere and first Commonwealth to issue a "unit" coin outside of the UK and its spin off territories like the Isle of Man and Jersey. The dollar showed a Mob of roos (5 actually) and is the only one to have the Machin effigy on it. I believe it was released officially in May 1984 (Please correct me if I am wrong). A ridiculously high number of 186 million were minted (About 12 for every Australian at that time!). My example is a bit better than average (EF-AU) but not perfect though. It was also designed by Stuart Devlin, the same person who did the other designs back in 1964/65! I also have the 50 cents as well and will show a few more of these as we head back in time. The other plus is many of my early 80s coins (Especially the 5c to 20c) are AU/UNC with lustre and I am very grateful as most came in bulk buy ins. The 1c to 10c are also in generally nice condition.
