I get very confused when it comes to errors coins. What is a die? What is it supposed to do? What is it not supposed to do? What's the complete operation? I can't recognize errrors unless I know how the machine works.

I have a 1944D five cent. I think it has PMD...but can't understand why the chips didn't fall off...will post photos..sigh

Very interesting info in second paragraph of link you sent me about coin in the older days. Is it possible that the force of the upper hammer could come strike a plan er with such force as to cause damage to it?

Hopefully tomorrow, I will be able to post photo of the silver 1944D five cent. It seems like PMD but the chips didn't fall away, it appears that heat is involved to cause the chips to stick to the cent. Thanks again for the link.
