I am seeing/thinking similar now... some sort of pre-strike planchet error?

Could you provide photos of the edge of the coin. With there being a chance in the way the cleaned coin reflects light from one side of the anomaly to the other and the spots of metal "flow" lines on the edge of the anomaly, I would like to be able to rule out tha some of the coin was protected from and some of it affected by acid.

I must say when I hopped on the forum yesterday and the OP had just posted this coin, my first thoughts were some sort of planchet error. But I did not reply at the time because I was curious what others much more qualified would think.

Could it have gotten some corrosive on the edges of the coin leaving the unaffected area raised?

If it is only a stain, it should prove at standard weight.

If the weight is slightly under. It is going to be corrosive. I'm calling PMD. It's too complicated to be anything else.

Shot of the edge as requested. The edge looks like this over the entire perimeter. Nothing unusual to my untrained eye...

Just weighed some newer dimes at 2.2 as well, so if it is wrong it's my scale... Do I need a more precise scale 0.00?

I'm thinking acid-etched in the lower areas.

I don't know enough to disagree regarding the acid. How thick is the clad layer? wouldn't the acid reveal the copper core? The coins texture is also quite consistent over the surface. Wouldn't acid have an etching effect? It just doesn't seem like any of the coin has been removed. Thanks again
