This one seems extreme. You can see on the bottom loop that there are a good number of split serifs.

Normally I'd think this would be a die chip or a broken post but the split serifs match the S design.

Thoughts?

I don't see the serifs. I always miss them, is there a way you could point them out as a learning exercise?

I think this is more of a damaged mintmark punch issue. Doesn't look like a typical split serif.

Fair point, it is quite unusual. Wonder what type of damage happened to the mintmark punch.

As far as I know, you don't normally get split pieces of metal like that.

Possibly the punch was falling apart.

Looks like a Cud as I don't see anything on the top of the s, only in that gap at the bottom. Still very interesting.

The lower loop area is from a damaged punch. Even the RPM-001 shows the same thing:
1970-S-Unlisted-RPM?
You can see the same affect on the lower loop. But this is a North and that damaged punch is not part of the RPM.
