there are differences.

Is this a RPM?

If it is, it appears to be very similar to the 1974D 1MM-007 on Chuck's site, (Coppercoins.com) but the die markers are not there and this coin has something just below the D, the 1974D 1MM-007 does not.

Help needed - Thanks!

Maybe it's an EDS?

Thanks rockdude

Good point! If its a RPM, maybe it is the same RPM but earlier than the MDS on Chuck's site.

Rockdude - If you can see die flow on a coin, it's not EDS for sure. Die state is a specific measure of a die's age by looking at the amount of 'flow' on the die that was imparted on the coin. I can see you're completely guessing at the coin being EDS, which is why I addressed this. It cannot be EDS.

Chuckster - The problem here is that your coin is MDS-LMDS and the coin on coppercoins is improperly attributed as MDS. It's actually LDS. If anything, your coin was struck before the coin on the site.

Given that I attempted an overlay and don't get a good match because you did not take any of your images face-on with the coin. All of them were at some angle. In order to get a decent overlay BOTH images have to be taken face-on with the coin....meaning the coin has to be flat under the optics that took the shot. Yeah, I understand...lighting and all that. But in order for me to get a decent overlay, you'll have to supply a photo of the date and mintmark of the coin flat.

Additionally there's yet another problem. I'm not convinced either coin is an RPM at all. Some coins have been listed on my site that I am not sure of. This is because there are two of us working on the site, and we have differing opinions. We should be talking together on controversial listings, but I guess he thought this one wouldn't be controversial. Anyhow, I would need to see one coin or the other in person to be convinced.

Last...there is some chance this coin is from the same die as the one on the site. There's also some chance that it's not an RPM. However...if it is an RPM, it's a really good one, because 1974D RPMs are really tough to find.

Thanks Chuck.

I'll try and take some pics head on for a possible overlay.

Here are three head-on pictures.

Unless there is something on the right side of the D, unfortunately, I don't see any RPM in these photos, just die wear, but I'll defer to Chuck for 100% confirmation.

I really lean toward all the die polishing as the culprit in moving metal around the mintmark, If the edge of the mintmark were compromised by the die polishing, the struck coins would look the way yours does. Just a thought.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Bill:

Die polish/wear etc- I'm pretty sure this coin is not a RPM but I'll still like to see what Chuck has to say before putting this one away.
