ExoGuy, my apologies, I went back, and the spelling for the Pennsylvania Union soldier I pulled up, was George Shingel, not George Schwingel. Upon further digging, I found that Phillip was sentenced to only 2 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. He died of stomach cancer.

@ thecoinguy1964 .... Thanks for the update. This stuff can be confusing at times. Even the big auction houses get stuff mixed up. As for me .... been there, done that!
It's conceivable that this was George's coin and c/s. I was never able to find that he was a gunsmith though.

Quote: I can't remember .... It was three or four decades ago, and I've acquired some 2,500 c/s's since then. ExoGuy any chance you'll be updating Brunk's wonderful reference book with one of your own now? You must have many more that aren't listed than that are by now. 2500 is impressive to say the least.

Quote: ExoGuy any chance you'll be updating Brunk's wonderful reference book with one of your own now? Hi westcoin .... The short answer is "no." On the plus side, I'm hoping that the Newman Numismatic Portal will accept my offer of a large c/s database that I've compiled over the past 25 years; this, in addition to thousands of c/s pics. One of my c/s compadres has sent Greg's 3rd edition draft to the NNP. Sadly it lacks the pics. Greg was legally blind in his closing years. To the end, he was hopeful of regaining his sight. I often communicated with Greg by phone, and he was considering the NNP, as I suggested. Greg wasn't at all interested in profiting from a book, so the idea of giving his research to collectors, freely available online, was appealing. My hope is that folks at the NNP can someday put Greg's manuscript online in book form, augmented by my compadre's and my own info and pics. If so, it'll greatly benefit c/s collectors. Meanwhile, I continue to write c/s articles for the National Token Collectors' Association, NTCA; this, going on four years now. Compared to other numismatic avenues, the study of c/s's is a road that relatively few collectors have explored. It's wide open for discovery and making great finds. On the downside, I used to return home from shows with a pocketful of c/s's. Now, if I can find one or two pieces at a show, that makes for a great day!

Ha, the findagrave link in this thread led me to reconnecting with my mom's cousins after 53 years. I had no idea they were still alive. Thanks @thecoinguy1964. I clicked on your link, thought "this is interesting", looked up my grandparents, sure enough there was their headstone, then under my great-grandmother were pictures of my ancestors that I have copies of! I thought, who is posting these? Boom, found them.
Anyway, just an aside about where this stuff leads us.

Gregory Brunk's last edition is a book I still haven't found at a decent price, (low enough that I'll jump on a copy). I keep seeing them go for a lot ($175+) and I'm sure that it is worth it, I have used a copy my friend Mark from Heritage brought over and he tried to help me ID some of the 2 cent C/S coins I have, most were not in the book. So I knew at that point, there were a lot more out there. More often than not, when I run across a C/S coin it's not in Brunk's book. I have found some copies of the earlier editions but, they seem even less comprehensive than his last edition, and I think they can't be worth the money people ask for them ($50+).
I was going through some of Dave Bowers writings earlier today and ran across some on his collection of C/S coins. He bought a huge lot from George Fuld just before he passed away. Dave mentioned he was selling all of his C/S coin and probably already has by now as the articles were at least 6 years old now.

GREAT FIND, Westcoin .... It's good to see a searchable version, albeit a static format, now online. This is possibly the manuscript that Greg was updating in subsequent years. I'm told that he made written notations and corrections as info from contributors came in. I'll be curious to see if Greg's c/s photos follow. Ultimately, I think it would be great if/when the NNP gets a dynamic version posted online. Then, contributing collectors could add pics and info; this, similar to what's done on Richard's Token Catalog. FOLLOW-UP for those consulting this "2006" edition: It looks to be a word copy (no pics) of Greg's 2003 edition that he made as a starting point; this, in order to do pencil updates thereafter. I, myself, had sent Greg many updates and corrections beyond 2006. All collectors should be aware that there remains a good deal of editing to be done.

@ Westcoin .... This is great, too. The pages are not as sharp as the other copy, but the pics are helpful for comparison.
Again, I would caution collectors that there are many misattributions in these volumes.
