2012 Toonies, Error Or Fake?

Adding to the advice of John100 and other experts who posted replies: listen to the experts! Some deeply engrained beliefs (like the sound a coin makes, micro-differences in weight, etc) are just plain misconceptions and distinctions without a difference.

Some experts saw thousands of coins of specific types. That is how you understand the info posted by some here. Listen to those that are a little bit ahead of you in the road.

It take years or even a lifetime to fill a gap. Some gaps will never be filled. The fun is in the hunting.

Coins hit surfaces in different angles and speed. Our heads and therefore ears are never in the same relative position to objects. The surface may be uneven. Windows may be open or shut, environment background noise higher or lower. Amount of cerúmen in the ear varies day to day. We are emotionally biased towards one result. In summary: what we hear is a sense. If one wants to translate a sense into a scientific value, one will need to control these and other variables to measure differences.

Is it important? No. Why? Because the Mint procure planchets from various vendors. Thickness of one sheet may be different from another. Impurities may have a different concentration even in the same sheet. Weight of planchets vary. Than we have the boring process: centering varies and rarely is 100% exact. Finally the core planchets composition, physical dimensions and position in the ring also varies. The Mint never published the precise specs of twoonies and their production tolerance - each one of us have a guesstimate based on personal experience, but nothing official to compare.

In summary, you are always comparing different things.

But, if you like doing it and have fun with it, please continue.

As previously posted by someone else I need to do more testing. If you have any simple test you can have me do on this coin or another to validate that it's a normal sound for a toonie or normal metal I'll happily do it. Or if you have several toonies or hundreds if you live in Canada then test the sound your self and compare it to the one I compare in the video I posted on page 3. I slide and drop two toonies one is normal the other is the one with alot more wear, lighter looking core and weighs a tiny bit more then the other, and the queen is closer to the rim then any other toonie iv checked to date since iv become interested. To most regular people iv asked they say it looks weird so the sounding weird makes me super curious as to what I have or if nothing. I'm not disappointed if it's nothing because then iv learned something about how toonies can sound like this one and won't have to worry about it again:p
