Clearly the OP's coin lacks the sharp, clear definition of an original strike. An obvious copy.

With the provenance missing, it's difficult to be optimistic that this is the real thing. We wish you the best and sincerely hope you prove us wrong. Please do let us know when you get more official verification.

Wow. Thank you very much for that generous offer, nss-52. I'll hopefully know well before then if it's fake. Aiming to start getting it authenticated this weekend. Still no word on the provenance apart from what I mentioned earlier.

Interesting!!!! Kudos to GrapeCollects for his deep involvement in researching the copper 43 d cent. Very impressed. It goes to show the depth of knowledge that supports this forum. What bothers me about this coin/post is the quality of photos. Everyday pics are posted, some horrible, and some quite amazing from nubies questioning whether or not they have a double die. Often times with too many pics. Only to learn that their coin has what appears to be Machine Doubling, which has no premium value. There is most definitely for most of us a challenge to post the necessary photos needed for proper evaluation by the experts. Yet it is understandable how important the smallest issue can be in its proper determination. So we try and try to post the best possible pics in hopes of getting confirmation of having found a minor double die. Thrilled that the coin is worth maybe $5 or $10. But what we have here is a post from someone obviously knowledgeable in the field, who has vast knowledge of one of the most sought after modern US coins, 1943 D copper cent, which has the potential of six figure value, yet posts photos that are at best sub par for a coin worth face value. Find a sixth grader to take great photos for you. Pay them $20 for their time. After all what is $20 when you have a $500,000 coin. To me the red flags went up just from the quality of the submitted photos.

It is obviously a counterfeit. Not worth taking to a TPG. I might be a little to stubborn though...

Hey altec12, I appreciate your comment and apologize for the photos. They aren't actually mine, but rather the seller's. The coin will be in my possession tomorrow and I have a much better camera and understanding of the importance of lighting, angle, and focus. But I still felt it was worth getting a head start on people's opinion in this community so that if there was an overwhelming consensus this it is fake, I wouldn't lose time in my refund window, while also learning something. I made my purchasing decision off of the following: 1. I could get a refund in case it's fake. 2. It didn't look like any known fakes that anyone has posted online. 3. The seller struck me as the type who cared more about cash up front than doing a ton of research on what they had, especially on a coin that frankly looks like any other to a complete outsider to numismatic study. More pictures are coming soon that will be of better quality.

@foxfire.... I couldn't tell you if your coin is the real-deal or a fake, but if I had it in my possession, I'd definitely send pics to someone like Ken Potter a/or hit up the closest PCGS convention. GL to you, as I do sincerely hope you have a genuine coin.

The strike on the real deal would show it is a fresh die. This OP's coin, looks looks like a fake to me.

Hello all, the coin arrived today and upon seeing it for myself, I have to conclude that it is fake for a number of reasons, but still unlike any I've researched. New photos are posted below, but they aren't much better and I think it's simply because the coin lacks detail. What stood out to me initially: 1. As one commenter aptly noticed, the hairline seems off when compared to any known 43 examples, steel or otherwise. Especially the divot in the hair below the WE looks deeper than any I've seen. 2. As bats noted, the edges do seem very off and indeed sharp to the touch, unlike any cent I've ever handled. 3. The detail on the relief is far from what I'd think it would be, given the deeper striking pressure on the die. This is perhaps the most clear reason I think it's counterfeit, although the seller's photos left room for doubt. I'm sure there are other reasons you all can notice as well, feel free to share but I do intend to send it back. Thank you very much for your replies and insights. It's not a complete loss with all I've learned the last few days.

It looks even more counterfeit in these pics. I would say that the hairline is way of even worse than noted. The relief looks even shallower in these. Also the edges change depth a lot through out the coin. I am sure this is a counterfeit but if you want to do get it authenticated. I truly would. Also could you please try some better pics. Like a closeup of the hairline, the edges and the strange mark under Lincoln's bust. Including trust and the overall relief and details of Lincoln. I did do some studying recently and it seems to be a transferred die like I think Taylorism said.
