Final version of the 1380s listing... 1389 - apparently none (would be 791 AH) 1388 - Grinya (790 AH) 1387 - january1may (789 AH) 1386 - JohnConduitt (788 AH) 1385 - EddieDiz, Grinya (787 AH) 1384 - tdziemia 1383 - Spence, EddieDiz; Grinya, JohnConduitt (785 AH = Mar 1383-Feb 1384) 1382-81 - apparently none (would be 784 and 783 AH) 1380 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (782 AH = Apr 1380-Mar 1381) For 1370s I have this bit of badly struck copper, which I hadn't been able to attribute until a recent conversation with @Grinya...   Anatolia, uncertain beylik (Menteshe?) Obverse (?) hexagram with asterisk in center, both with dots between rays Reverse (?) date [8 ]86 [i.e. 776], Arabic inscription [illegible on this example] above Cf. Zeno 229143, 229144, 272145, 272146; more distantly cf. Numista 301424Note that the year 776 AH began in June 1374 AD and ended in June 1375 AD, which makes assignment to an AD year somewhat tricky. 1374, I think. |

I'm so glad that you are providing these summaries of the decades @j1m! Here is my earliest dated coin from Europe. This Groschen was minted at Aachen, as so many of the early dated coins of Europe were. The date 1375 AD is in full Roman numerals--MCCCLXXV--although the letterform on that L is oddly shaped (differently than the other letter Ls, but not exactly like a letter I either). It is attributed as Levinson I-4a. From a CNG auction listing on a different coin of the same type: Quote:
In 1360/1 the city was entrusted by the emperor to Wilhelm II, a member of the younger branch of the Dukes of Jülich. To commemorate this appointment in 1372, jungheitgroschen, so called from the German "Jungheit" in the legend, were minted. The inclusion of the Roman numeral date on these issues, like this specimen, make them the first dated German coinage. The meaning of "Jungheit" remains in dispute: either the term refers to the ascendancy of the younger branch in their acquisition of Aachen, or to the temporary status of the mint, independent of imperial control.  I should have guessed that you didn't have an 1374, but I didn't expect you to have an 1375. Quote:

Yes for sure it is drool-worthy @j1m--clearly one of my top purchases for 2021. Here is a Pfennig from the German Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut. It was issued by Otto V and Frederick I and their first name initials seem to be at least partially visible on the obv. It is datable to the range 1376 to 1379 AD and is attributed as Steinh. 23 and Beirl. 66 (neither of which I own).   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

No dateable ones for this decade. Some date range ones. 1373-82 Hungarian Denar under King Louis I (Saracen head);Huszar 548,Unger 433,Pohl 90. It has a crown at the base of the double cross.  1373-82 Hungarian Denar under King Louis I;Huszar 597var.,Unger 432a var.,Pohl 89-1 var. It has a legend variation of a star between REGIS and HUNGARIE on reverse.  1373-82 Hungarian Denar under King Louis I Saracen Head) with a crown-crown mint mark;Huszar 547,Unger 432e,Pohl 89-2.  1373-82 Hungarian Denar under King Louis I (Saracen Head);Huszar 547,Unger 432e,Pohl 89-1. It is a variant with no points around the double cross.  1373-82 Hungarian Denar under King Louis I with a P mint mark with an extension at the base of the P resembling L at the bottom left of double cross;Huszar 547 var.,Unger 432c var.,Pohl 89-8 var. This variation of the mint mark is not recorded in the catalogues.  |

Another undated English halfpenny. Richard II's most common issue: Richard II Long Cross Halfpenny, 1377-1380 Tower. Silver, 0.47g. Early bust, intermediate, Lombardic Ns; +RICARD REX ANGL. Long cross and pellets; CIVITAS LONDON (S 1699). |

Nice ones @Eddie! Over the years, I've struggled to date my Saracen head Denar (Huszar 547), but have settled on 1358 to 1371 AD. I purchased it as being from 1342 to 1382 AD, but then had it at 1373 to 1382 AD for quite some time before settling on this earlier date.  I'm pretty sure that we haven't had any Bulgarian representation previously on this thread, so here is a Half Groschen from the date range of 1371 to 1395. It was issued by King Ivan Shishman and is attributed as Youroukova 125.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

@EddieDiz, what a nice portraits:)) It seems that I also have only one dated coin from this period in my collection. This is Golden Horde Dang of Muhammad khan, Ordu mint with a nice date 777AH (1376), Sagdeeva 353.   |

@ Spence I just use what Numista has. According to them there are denars that can be dated to 1342,43,45,and 58. I don't have any of those.

Ok yep using the info on numista does make sense! Here is a Pfennig from the German Bishopric of Munster that can be dated to the range of 1379 to 1381 AD. It was issued by Bishop Potho von Potenstein. The obv legend is POTMONIS EPISCOPI while the rev legend is + MONETA NOM S. I have it attributed as IL-XX-2, but to be honest I can't remember what this reference actually is.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Here is a very recent purchase (hours ago), not yet in hand. Archbishopric of Cologne, undated weisspfenning minted in Riel in 1376. 25 mm, 2.5 g. Noss Koln 193:  Obv: St. Peter, nimbate and standing under a gothic arch, a cross in his right hand and keys in his left. At top, two small shields. FRIDICUS AREPVS COLOn (Friedrich, Archbishop of Cologne) Rev: Large shield of Cologne-Trier inside a polylobe. PERYTALARGn MOnETA RYLEN (not sure the meaning of the first word or words ... maybe the second part is abbreviated form of ARGENTVM  ) Edited by tdziemia

1374 - january1may (776 AH = Jun 1374-Jun 1375)
1373 - tdziemia
1372-71 - none yet (would be 773 and 772 AH)
1370 - Grinya (771 AH = Aug 1369-Jul 1370)
Note that 773 AH = July 1371 to July 1372 AD, only barely corresponding to 1372; somewhere between 773/1372 and 776/1374 is the changeover between AH/AD conversions. Fortunately 1373 is already covered.
