Quote: Interesting to consider that the 1350s followed in the wake of the Black Death, and economic activity/output was down all across Europe, presumably meaning less new coining? This seems to be a very complicated question. The Black Death in England, for example, did destroy the economy - but it also created inflation, which meant people were being paid more in the 1350-60s than before the Black Death (even though it bought a lot less). The Black Death doesn't seem to be all that an uncommon disaster either. By the 1340s, England's economy was already on the way down from a boom in the 1330s, which had arisen in the wake of the Great Famine (1315-21). Edward III produced most of his coins in his 3rd coinage - 1344-1351, covering a period when half the population died in the Black Death. Rather than cutting back, they introduced the halfgroat and groat in 1351 (when, incidentally, England was hit by another famine). Presumably, this was a reaction to the inflation. The plague returned in 1361-2, killing another 20%, but in 1363 they began striking significant numbers of coins at the Calais mint (opened 1347). It's a bit odd that commentaries about coinage of the time seem to run in a parallel universe, and the loss of two thirds of the population to disease doesn't even get a mention. But coin production doesn't seem to have had much to do with it either.

Did the image of St. Ladislas appear for the first time on Hungary coins starting in the 1350s? If so, I am wondering why. At first I thought maybe this was a namesake relationship, but Louis is Lajos in Hungarian, Ladislas is Laszlo, so apparently not. ANyhow, I like the representation of Ladislas holding an axe (or halberd?).

I have some probable-but-uncertain 1350s coins, which I should really get around to posting for ID.
In the meantime, here's the usual decade listing, now for the 1350s...
1359 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (760 AH) 1358 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (759 AH) 1357 - Grinya, Spence? (758 AH) 1356 - none yet (would be 757 AH) 1355 - Grinya (756 AH) 1354-52 - none yet (would be 755 to 753 AH) 1351 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (752 AH) 1350 - none yet (would be 751 AH)
Note that 750 AH is March 1349 AD to March 1350 AD, so if @JohnConduitt's "Jani Beg" coin is actually 750 AH, it doesn't quite belong in this decade.

@january1may, thanks for the year list, I waited for it. Will close at least 3 year gaps @Spence, I mean it is in average conditions and I have nothing to add to this type except for general description... e.g. this coin is much more interesting. It is with the name of Jani Beg Khan and Sarai mint, but undated and not mentioned in Sagdeeva. According to Zeno it may probably be a posthumous emission with a name of Jani bek khan which was issued at the time of Aziz-shaykh khan.

Quote: It is with the name of Jani Beg Khan and Sarai mint, but undated and not mentioned in Sagdeeva. Very nice. This coin would have me pulling my hair out - is it Sagdeeva 256? No. Maybe 259? No, it has an extra line of text...and where's the date? Have they hidden it more than usual? I don't know I'd be able to find it on Zeno either, as there are so many Jani Beg coins from Saray. Quote: Note that 750 AH is March 1349 AD to March 1350 AD, so if @JohnConduitt's "Jani Beg" coin is actually 750 AH, it doesn't quite belong in this decade. Ok thank you. I will have to 'forward' it to the 1340s, where I don't have so many coins anyway.

@JohnConduitt, if I'm not mistaken, there are only 2 of them on Zeno. One is mine, another one is the one which helped me with recognition:)) I will post more coins without waiting for anybody else, if nobody doesn't mind. There are two dangs of Jani Beg Khan (Gulistan mint) years 754AH. The only difference is that the first (Sagdeeva 210) has noral date while the second (Sagdeeva 211) has an inverted date = 457 754: 457:
