Not too many Italian coins on this thread, but here is a Carrdrino da 2 Soldi from the City State of Padova. It is datable to the range of 1345 to 1350 AD. The obv inscription is CIVIT+PAD IA and the rev inscription is +S+PSDO CIMVS. I attributed it as Biaggi 1729.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Beautiful coin! And indeed a good reminder about Italy, where I have a bid on a coin from this decade as we speak, and also this denaro with a broad date range from Ferrara, under Obizzo as Marchese (marquis), 1344-1361. MIR 217. I will excuse the poor condition  by saying there are not many I have ever seen in much better condition. Obviously Padova, just up the road from Ferrara, was a wealtheir state at this time.   Obv: Splayed eagle, head facing left inside reeded circle. Making it two Italian coins in a row. Well done@tdz! This French Double Parisis is datable to the range 1346 to 1347 AD (first emission). The obv legend is PHILIPPVS REX FRANCO (with a retrograde N). The rev inscription is MONETA DVPLEX. It is attributed as Duplessy 269 and Roberts 2603a. As you can see from the pictures, the metal is quite dark--perhaps the silver was debased? Or maybe it is just wicked tarnished?   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

I love following this thread.
Love how the Islamic Caliphates dated their coins from the start, I have seen Dinars from the Ummayyad times with dates of like 35AH and 50AH which equates to like the time of Caliph Omar, a man who personally knew the Prophet Muhammad!
I won't be showing anything until I can show my Folis of Constans II (350s AD). Yes a 1200 year gap in my collection between that and my 1553 Edward VI Shilling

By the way, I also have by chance an Italian coin. It is not really datable Tessera from Messina identified (after a long search) as sec. XIV-XV centuries. So it may be minted starting from around this period:) The interesting fact that the coin was found in the north part of Crimea   Edited by Grinya

Three Italian coins—that's great! Also, I'm very glad to have you as an avid observer @pt. Here is a Half Denar from Serbia that is datable to 1346 to 1355 AD. It was issued by King Stefan Dusan and is attributed as Jov. 61. You can see Christ enthroned on the obv and the Tsar and Tsarina facing each other on the rev. That flan chip is a bummer, but I'm hopeful that the flan is now stable. This is my last coin to post for this decade.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

The Brabant coin I posted for 1344 would have followed suit (it also has a brownish tone to it). Here's the current status of the 1340s...
1349 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (750 AH = Mar 1349-Mar 1350)
1348 - Grinya (749 AH = Apr 1348-Mar 1349)
1347 - Grinya (748 AH = Apr 1347-Apr 1438)
1346 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (747 AH = Apr 1346-Apr 1347); Spence (Apr 1346-Feb 1347)
1345 - Grinya (746 AH = May 1345-Apr 1346)
1344 - tdziemia; Grinya (745 AH = May 1344-May 1345)
1343 - tdziemia, Spence; Grinya (744 AH = May 1343-May 1344)
1342 - Grinya (743 AH = Jun 1342-May 1343)
1341 - Grinya (742 AH = Jun 1341-Jun 1342)
1340 - Spence
All ten of the AD years in the 1340s are now covered! If/when any 741/740 AH coins show up I'd probably put them in a separate sub-list, because their conversion is uncertain and we already have 1340.
[EDIT: I don't have any more 1340s coins that I know of, though I do have coins for the 1330s and 1320s. Past that... things get tricky.]

This my best decade for dateable coins, but then I have almost nothing more from a single year  Duchy of Brabant, 1 gros, emission of 1339, Witte 360.   Obv: Brabant lion inside a border of 11 leaves and one lion. MONETA BRABAN' Rev. Cross pattee. (Int) IO' DVX LOT' BRAB' (Ext) BNDICTV SIT NOME DNI NRI IHV XPI This type was issued all over the Low Countries starting from 1337, and intermittently into the 1360s in Brabant. |
