Anyone have another coin to post for the 1280s? We have had a really good decade so I don't want to stop it early. However, let's make this "last call".

I don't think I have anything for the 1280s, but I did remember that I should probably make a date listing...

1289-88 - apparently none (would be 688 and 687 AH)
1287 - JohnConduitt, Grinya (686 AH)
1286 - apparently none (would be 685 AH)
1285 - Spence?
1284 - Grinya (683 AH)
1283-81 - apparently none (would be 682 to 680 AH)

With so few dated coins the listings are getting more and more irrelevant; there's been a lot of awesome coins for this decade, but only three were dated, and two of those three were the exact same type.

In retrospect, I remember that @Collects82 had a coin from 1282 - where is he? I don't think we've seen him for the 1380s either.

OK thx for the reminder @grin and a great way to get us started. We are back to the decade of the 1270s now. Hopefully, @collects82 will join us when we hit the decade of the 1180s.

This poor condition English penny has Henry III's name on it, but since he'd already died, this counts as an early issue of Edward I. The bust has the flowing 'realistic' hair all the Edwards would copy.

Class 6 pennies like this are usually terrible. Presumably, the dies were very worn. They used to be rare, until 1,916 of them were found in the Colchester (Essex) Hoard II (1969). All 1,916 were Class 6 pennies from the same pair of dies of the moneyer Ion from the Bury St Edmunds mint - previously only one specimen had been known.

Henry III Class 6 Posthumous Long Cross Penny, 1272-1275 (under Edward I)
Walking-Back-In-Time-From-1600-To-Antiquity-By-Decades-V3.0
Bury St Edmunds. Silver, 18mm, 1.5g. Crude bust with blob eyes holding sceptre, HENRICVS REX III (with III to left of sceptre). ION- O(N)-SAN-TAD (Ion of Bury St Edmunds). (S 1377).
From the Colchester II Hoard 1969.

The Colchester Hoard comprised 3 finds:

The first hoard (Colchester I) was discovered in 1902. A lead vessel contained 11-12,000 English short cross, Scottish, Irish and continental pennies, the last dated to 1237.

The second hoard (Colchester II) was discovered in the same house plot in 1969. A lead canister contained 14,065 mainly English voided long cross pennies. They all dated to before 1256, except the Class 6 pennies and a few others, which were added 16 to 22 years later, giving a date of deposition of around 1278.

A third empty lead container was found, presumed looted in medieval times.

The location of the hoards was where houses belonging to the Jewish Community stood in the 1270s. The theory is that these hoards were the property of a Jewish financier. He may have abandoned them during the pogrom of 1278 after Edward I's Statute of the Jewry in 1275, which placed restrictions on Jews including outlawing the practice of usury ('making unethical monetary loans that unfairly enrich the lender').

Many Jews were arrested and executed, and Jews were ultimately expelled from England in 1290.

This Hand Heller is one of the iconic coins in my medieval collection. It dates to circa 1270 AD and was issued by the German State of Hall am Kocher. I have attributed it as Saurma 1365/608 and Szego Pl#2, 20.

Nice coins so far!

For this decade, I have a double esterlin (2/3 gros) of the Duchy of Brabant, Brussels mint. Likely date range is 1277 to 1282. Witte 260 and Numista#95461.

Glad that @eddiediz posted those Slavonian Denars!

Here is a Hungarian Denar datable to the range 1270 to 1272 AD. The obv inscription is +Moneta VNGARIE while the rev has an Aleph in between the two birds.

Here is a pair of Dineros from the Italian Earldom of Barcelona. The obv inscription is BARQINO while the rev inscription is IA CO BR EX. I have attributed them both as C&C 1710. While the A letterforms are nice, the Q letterform is quite interesting to me!

This Grosso was issued by the Italian Republic of Venice somewhere in the range of 1275 to 1280 AD. The obv insciprtion is IA.9TARIN.S.M.VENETI while the rev inscription is IC XC. I have attributed it as Biaggi 2783.

I was pretty sure we would see more of Venice this century.

Another strong decade for you!
