Any other folks have coins minted starting in the decade of the 1200s? Let's plan to drop back into the decade of the 1190s starting tomorrow morning.

A great start to the decade @paul!

Here is my Denaro from the Italian City State of Brindisi. Some sources ascribe it to 1196 AD, while other have the broader range of 1196-1197 AD. Either way, it is good enough for the purposes of moving our thread back. The obv legend is +FREDERIC REX while the rev legend is +E INPERATOR. I have attributed it as Biaggi 436 and Spahr 32. These little guys are somewhat hard to find, especially without some edge clipping--clearly seen on this coin.




This is my only coin from this decade so I'm hoping others will be able to add to the collection beyond this Denaro and @paul's Jaga Deva copper.

I only have this, from Cilician Armenia.

Levon I Tank, 1198-1219

Sis. Bronze, 28mm, 6.9g. Bearded leonine head of Levon I facing, wearing crown with dots; Levon king of the Armenians. Patriarchal cross with two stars in lower fields; Struck in the city of Sis (Bedoukian 696).

Been a couple days since we've had a coin posted, so let's make this last call. Starting tomorrow morning we can drop back to the decade of the 1180s.

This also doesn't move us back. I'm somewhat scraping the bottom of the barrel, in that I'm again resorting to cut coins (as I will for a while); this coin may not be from this decade (or even this ruler); and this series has been described as 'the ugliest ever struck in England'.

On Rod Blunt's website, he has this dated 1200-1204, which would be John. But Spink just has them all assigned to Richard I's reign in general, which is 1189-1199. Despite that, it's in the name of King Henry.

Richard I The Lionheart Class 4b Cut Shortcross Halfpenny (from a Penny), 1189-1199

London. Silver, 11mm, 0.5g. Crowned bust facing, holding scepter, 7 pellets to crown, hair is single crescents, chin and side whiskers made of pellets; + hE(NRICVS R)EX. Short cross with four pellets in each angle +FVLKE (ON LVN) (S 1348C).

The Chunxi era (1174-1189) of the Southern Song dynasty was the first time that the year of issue were consistently minted on the cash coins.

This one is a 2 cash Chunxi Yuanbao from 1187. The "Shi Si" inscription on the reverse means "fourteen", representing the 14th year of the Chunxi era (1187) under Emperor Xiaozong.

Here's another cut halfpenny. At least it's better quality and firmly attributable both to the king and the decade. It even has the correct name on it.

Henry II Class 1b1 Short Cross Cut Halfpenny (from a penny), 1180-1182

London. Silver, 20mm, 0.7g. Facing bust with sceptre; HENRIC(VS REX) with rounded E and 4 serifs on N. Short voided cross with four pellets in each quarter; +RANDVL (ON LVND) (S 1344).

It could be Class 1a4 or 1a5 (which differ by the X and the hair, neither of which are on the coin). But the fact that it's a good quality coin, when 1a coins were not, suggests it is 1b1. They were all struck from 1180-2.
