It's caused by the die being loose in the chuck/holder and it slightly rotates/moves in the nanosecond after the strike and as the die is rising from the planchet. A variety is an anomaly put there on purpose by the mint(new effigy or font) or the mint floor person(like for handpunching a letter or digit to clean it up). Varieties are complete with good working machinery, proper alignment, proper pressures and good planchets Report this Post to the Staff
