?! typo?

"Solidus" is a denomination, and not even of this type. The emperor's name is Tacitus. I have no idea what the exergue inscription means, either here or on the linked example.

The Emperor is Tacitus. The auction house for that example was Solidus.

That's the officina at Siscia. They run from x to xxxviii.

It was mostly the auction description's "XXI V" that confused me. I'm guessing theirs is XXIII = 23 and this one is XXIIII = 24; they didn't do substractive numbers back then, and the angle is wrong for XXVII or XXVI.

IIRC there's an unrelated series with XXI on it around the same time? I don't know a lot about 3rd century coins.

I think it is actually xxiv, not xxi v. There's an xiv and xxxiv. I believe they did do subtraction (they did for all other numbers ending 4 or 9) but avoided iv, perhaps to prevent any confusion with Jupiter.

The XXI is a bit mysterious, but probably was to do with the metal ratio (20 copper to 1 silver).

Oh after I wake up I see a lot of comment.

Thank you for january1may and JohnConduitt. So the Emperor's name is Tacitus.

And I am just realizing what the numbers are for. When I try to read legends on roman coin. I'm becoming blind. I can't read...

As for becoming blind from reading, as long as I have been into coins I have been wearing an ibeam watch. Could not live without the light and magnifying glass.

The exe reads XXIVI. This is made up of two elements - XXI indicates the value mark of the coin which we believe indicates the ratio of silver to base metal in the coin which through metallurgical analysis seems to align with the silver being approximately 5% during this period. This the XXI means 20 (XX) to 1 (I). The remaining VI is the make for the officina/workshop that minted the coin, which in this case is officina 6.

. Which coins are from X to XXXVIII - Siscia? Are there coins XX, XXV, XXVIII, XXX of Tacitus?
