I like Lincolns a lot when I was a kid, but I sort of lost interest as an adult.

How would you assess the grade and value of this coin? How serious is gouge above the date?

Why exactly is there such a premium attached to this date?

I'm gonna say vf30 straight grade, the 14d only had a mintage of around 1.2 million, pretty scarce in anything au50 and above considering the amount of collectors out there for this popular series.

Most '14-D cents entered circulation and the majority saw a lot of usage for many years before they became widely recognized as a scarcity. Even though the '09-S VDB gets more attention and has a lower mintage than the '14-D (about 500 thousand vs. 1.2 million), significant numbers of the '09-S VDB cents were quickly saved and put aside resulting in a higher survival rate than the '14-D in the AU and above grades.

VF-25/30, close

The hit above the date is bad but not that bad.

the obverse dies for these can be tricky to determine especially if the coin is not dead on straight. best guess is obv die #2. this is a nice key coin. I have it at VF30. I dont think they would details the coin for the scratch.
