@Earle42 mushy letters are diagnostic of clips as the negative space left by the missing material and lack of a protorim often causes strike weakness in the immediate area around the clip. Enough of the metal moved in to form an edge, but not enough to form the devices. Thus the weakness on that area of the strike. If it were a proof coin and was struck twice, the devices would have probably look normal after the second strike. But business strike cents only get on strike. The missing clipped area would probably be very small on this coin. Seen an edge of the coin on that area would be nice to see?
