I don't know if we have any professional coin dealers on the forum who responded to either of the previous PNG/ICTA Grading Service Surveys (the last in 2004) http://www.coinmag.com/gradingsurveyresults.html . I would like to know if such dealers feel that ANACS, under the aggressive new leadership of James Taylor will be elevated to Tier One in the same category as PCGS and NGC. I'm guessing the next Survey will be in 2007, but that's only a guess. Or are dealers so conservative that it will take years before ANACS reaches the same stature as PCGS and NGC (whether they deserve it or not is argumentative)? |

I am not a dealer, but a very serious collector and have been for over 40 years. I have had over a hundred of my best coins graded by ANACS in the past two years and 'conservative' is one word I would not use to describe them. I dare say no one would argue that a single coin is over-graded. A few of them have nearly left me in tears for the grade given. Several coins I sent in were in PCGS and NGC slabs and not one of them were offered an equal grade. All were offered from 2 to 5 grade points lower. I truly do not know why NGC and PCGS have such great reps, but I am not afraid to buy an ANACS. Lou

I did not take the survey, but as a dealer, I have more faith in ANACS providing an accurate grade than either PCGS or NGC. I still have not seen one that is overgraded. Many dealers are going to continue to prefer the other two since the higher the grade on the slab, the higher the money they can get. There are other dealers like me who are more interested in having the coins accurately graded than making more money, but I fear that we are few and far between. I predict that ANACS will move into the first tier due to collectors' preferences, not dealers'. It is time for collectors to make their voices heard. The other thing to consider is that ANACS will be getting into the registry set game. Since they are going to accept PCGS and NGC in addition to ANACS in their sets, there is more flexibility for the collector. ANACS is definitely the company for the collector.  |

I really like ANACS---and I like Mr Taylor from when I've talked to him...but in the last few months I have viewed as many new ANACS slabs and coins graded since the first of the year (old or new holders) and it seems like their grading is getting lax....maybe its just the photos but it seems that ANACS is getting to the same place PCGS is....
I still think they would be best for Jefferson and Franklins but I'm starting to watch the new ANACS closely.

While I am not a full time dealer 1/2 of our income comes from coins and antiques. I'm with Susan in regards to Anacs graded coins. In fact I prefer to buy them knowing I may be getting a better deal on an accurately graded coin. I dislike paying a premium for PCGS and NGC; it has never materialized into more profits. At least at the local shows that I attend my customers are buying the coin and not the plastic. It may be different when dealing with high end uncirculated coins that the investor type prefers, but as for collector type material that I generally deal with ANACS works for me. |

Common cents.....you know that is the same reaon I like ANACS. They are cheaper....they are just as good or better at grading....you can find coins cheaper in they are in a ANACS slabs most of the time. I don't know how many new ANACS slabs you have seen of the new ones...I can't wait to see some in person but it seems like I'm seeing more of the higher grade coins already....hope its not going to be like ICG...also they have started the FIRST STRIKE thing on ASE and that is alot of hog-wash... They are still one of the tops in my book but if what I see in photos is true....they are going down on the list. Speedy |

I think if ANACS wants to be considered a "Tier One" grading service the one thing they need to do is improve their marketing. The level of service and consistency/conservativeness of grading is nearly irrelevant. It is all about marketing. They need to make their holders look expensive. Their new holder is much more attractive than the hideous ones they replaced. That will help. The most important thing for them to do is to spend lots of money advertising and telling people how great they are. It works for NGC and PCGS and is starting to work for ICG. Perception is more important than reality. People believe what they read, even if it is an obviously biased source. If they bribe sponsor the ANA or PNG like NGC and PCGS have then that will help their reputation too. The PNG/ICTA grading survey is not a good indicator of how accurately each service grades coins. Since they only asked dealers to participate, what they really found out is which brand of coin holder do you make the most money on when you sell it to a collector. Dealers like the ones they can sell for the most profit. They couldn't care less if the coin is accurately graded. If ANACS wants to score well on this survey they need to find a way to make dealers more money on their ANACS coins. |

AMG, I like your thoughtful insight. ANACS currently has a public relations situation and image which will take a long time to change in the minds of dealers and collectors. But, I believe under the new leadership of James Taylor that it can and will be done. The question is what can we as individuals and as part of this growing Coin Community Forum do to hasten this process beyond the obvious effort of sending as much of our business to ANACS as possible? Regarding the PNG/ICTA survey as an indicator of quality and reputation of the various grading services and companies, I agree that it is flawed by the narrow selective nature of its target audience, but as far as I know, it's the only one of its type ever conducted, so it is all with which we have to work. I don't believe there has ever been a formal consumer survey on the same subject taken; I could be wrong. Maybe it's time one happens. Fred |
