I've said it before--think bartering. Hoard your chickens and alcoholic beverages. Will be worth much in the post-apocalyptic world.

If the U.S. Mint wants to lower the cost of production of Cents even further, metal coins could be replaced by coins made of injection molded plastic.
Quite a few countries around the World have been issuing plastic banknotes for more than 10 years.

What I also find amazing is in the last 10 years these are the P and D minting figures of Lincoln cents.
2022 - 1442.00M This is all the pennies they minted this year, wow. Something is up?
2021 - 7908.62M
2020 - 7908.62M
2019 - 7040.40M
2018 - 7803.20M
2017 - 8634.02M
2016 - 9118.40M
2015 - 9365.30M
2014 - 8146.40M
2013 - 7070.00M

Is there a phasing out of pennies going on.Tune in next year.

Something is going to happen because in May of this year is the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.

I doubt that would help. Putting materials and production aside, the handling logistics alone make the cent a loser. This new plastic production process would have to be almost free itself, and I doubt it would be economical considering that play money pennies sell online for about $3 per 100.

Give it up, people. Maintaining a circulating cent is needless waste.

I believe that is only two months. March just closed out and I doubt it has been updated with complete Q1 totals. Looking at the other denominations compared to last year, everything is projected to be down this year if that is a full Q1 total.

Assuming it is only two full months, that gives 8652 million cents; more than enough to match the recent trends. However, if those are full Q1 totals, then everything is going to be low this year.

The bureaucrats in D.C are idiots. I'm willing to bet if any of them dropped a cent they wouldn't bother picking it up - like the other 99.99% of the population. With the record inflation served-up by our current ineptocracy - the cent has lost all purpose and only serves as a relic to the past.

Yup and as I said, I hope they stop circulating cents and just move on to NIFC cents made of copper or bronze for collectors to maintain their collections and to memorialize the Lincoln Cent so to not be forgotten.

Just remember those 2009 bronze cents and imagine all future Lincoln cents that way.

Hopefully they kill the stupid shield design before that happens - one ugly coin compared to some of the other proposed designs at the time.

I actually like the shield.

How about a compromise... higher relief on both sides of the cent! Maybe some depth would give the shield more spice.

Nice thing about NIFC cents is they could give them away free post paid up to twenty to a customer and still save millions and millions of dollars.

and just add a little handful to every order and still be millions ahead.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
