An honest assessment of this coin cannot be made from these horrific pictures. I'm guessing any real world pictures would reveal the coin has probably been dipped to death and a TPG would detail the coin AU Cleaned ——- (providing it's genuine of course!)

Not really sure what's so horrific about these pictures. Any clarification would be helpful. They seem crystal clear to me even as I enlarge the pictures.  The coin appears to have the correct Type 1 obverse and reverse with the berry or olive bud emanating from inside the right claw of the eagle.

I seriously doubt N.S. would even touch non-genuine or altered coins. Now I cannot tell if this is Artificially Dipped or not, I am not proficient on the topic. It looks alright to my eyes at least, but I think I see why westernsky thought these were bad pics, lots of glare from very likely huge amounts of original luster remaining.

Thanks for the kind compliment but the coin is raw. I try to be careful but there are always people out there who will try to deceive for money. I get the careful nature of many here and don't think that I am above being snookered by a fake. Nonetheless the coin looks very sharp to me in all the features that I can see and seems to have the correct features of a coin of this year as far as my limited knowledge can tell but I am far from an expert in this series.

"Horrific" = bluish tint in both pictures.
Either the ambient light is reflecting off of something blue or the seller is deliberately trying to hide the true surfaces of the coin by playing with the lighting.
I'd ask for better pictures before committing to this coin.

This has the look of a mint state coin with reflective surfaces, but the main question is authenticity. I usually feel comfortable buying raw classic coins, but there are a few series I wouldn't consider buying raw, such as gold Indian quarter eagles, and Trade dollars. There are just too many high quality counterfeits out there. This one looks generally correct, but there are a few areas that give me pause. The toes don't look right, the grass at the base looks too coarse, the G in GOD seems short, and there is a dot in the middle of the date that looks suspicious. There were several die pairs of this issue, so it's possible that these discrepancies are specific to a certain die, but for that kind of money I wouldn't take the chance.

If the color in the images is correct then it does look over-dipped. The high level of remaining detail, close to uncirculated, should be accompanied by significant luster that is not showing. Assuming it's genuine then I'd guess AU+ Details - Improperly Cleaned.
Because this is a key date worth $2,000 in AU58 and $10,000 in MS64, I would want professional in-hand authentication.

I think the blue tint is reflection from the bright blue felt background. This is what the coin looked like before I cropped it. I think there are even blue fibers over the rim of the coin. There were 17 die pairs for this date/mm. I thought it looked great in the pictures and don't get the sense that he is trying to hide anything. He also has a generous return policy so that mitigates risk to a great extent.

Date and mint mark location look correct for C-13 or C-20 and based on the left wing I'm leaning towards C-20. It appears to be high AU condition to me but better images would certainly help.

Looks Unc to me or very close from what I can see. Coin looks good to me as well though I would want to have it tested with A Sigma tester if you get it in hand and weigh it. I agree that the blue background may be messing with how it looks in hand. Im thinking MS-62 if no hiding hairlines or over dipping. The price even for details coins can be pretty high on these .

The coin appears genuine. There were 21 die pairs used for the 1874 CC, but I could not find a matching die pair after looking at 20 or 30 genuine examples. If Dave 700x wants to share photos of a C-20 matching die pair, I would like to see them. AU 55/58
