This is a 2000P Massachusetts quarter with some kind of a defect that is lower than the surface and about three quarters of the way around. There is no damage on the reverse. Can any one tell me what causes this?

I need to extend the height of my camera to get a whole picture, so until I do this is the best that I can do in that respect.

@gar, is the reeding along the edge still intact? We see folded over rims on Dryer Coins, but I'm not sure that this is what you've got.

The colour is throwing me off, is this the actual colour of the coin? The area in question appears raised, is this the case? I think a basic cell phone shot with natural light would be helpful here. I can't think of any sort of mine error that would have this effect. I think a Rim Fin wound more noticeable over top the devices, some of this looks incuse and some looks raised.

If possible add full shots of the font and back of the coin please.

Based on the current photos it looks more like coin wrapping machiene damage.

WREKKDD .. Pay no attention to the color, It's my lighting. The area in question is not raised, it is all incuse. I can't give you a cell phone picture, mine is a very cheap phone and doesn't take good pictures. Also, I'm sure that it is not a Rim Fin defect or Coin Wrapping Machine error.. Full coin pictures will be upcoming soon.
JOHN1 .. Thanks for that address, it will come in handy in the future for me. It might be die attrition.
SPENCE .. I'm sure that it is not a Dryer Coin, the reedlng is fully intact.
Keep the comments coming guys, they are greatly appreciated.

Note on some areas, the typical flatten 90 degree angle is seen from Machine Doubling is present. On other areas it appears below the fields. (meaning the edge of the die raised on the area, (the opposite on the coin is a lowering. That is what happened to this die) So some die damage be present. Possible contact with the collar may have affected just that one area. If the metal would have been raised on the coin to the rim, then that would indicate that the outside edge of the die was polished on that area. (which is not the case here) But none of this has to do with die creation. Die events (life of the die doing it job) have altered this die. The next die polishing will rescue this die and it will be continued to be used. Not a premium for this, the only advantage if the why it happened on this coin. Now you can more forward with this information so you will know the answer on the next coin like it.

Thanks COOP, I've been waiting for your input on this coin. Greatly appreciated. I can't say that I completely understand everything that you said. I'm a newbie to coin collecting. Are you saying that you don't think that it is die attrition? I can't see any Machine Doubling. Not that I would really recognize it if I did see it.

Die attrition is when the collar wears off part of the outside edge of the die:

Note the outside of the die has removed part of the design from the dies surface area. Note on your coin none of the devices are affected, just the outside of the fields are affected. While interesting, it is just a die event. You might save it for an educational piece to show to a new collector? Put it in a large tub and make it "Show and tell" for new collectors you run into. Having something to show and tell them what it is, will save you a lot of words. seeing is understanding. Save different non collectables for just such purposes. Images are also a help as well. Something to spice up a conversation.
