this is known as zinc rot. The date (etc.) took a hit and also exposed some zinc which is rotting away.

That almost looks intentional - bit of acid to erase the face - I'm not seeing the 'classic' zinc rot here. The metal is too clean and the edges are well defined. Damaged face, and date

Copper plating compromised, exposing the zinc core.

Zinc rot setting in. How/why did the zinc core become exposed? Who knows. I agree, looks like perhaps a chemical reaction/spill. Spend it while you can, there is no stopping zinc rot.
