Most likely Machine Doubling but I thought I would share and see what everyone thought. Split serifs kinda throwing me off.

@hew, when the doubling is always skewed toward the rim, I think of DDD as the culprit.

Thanks Spence. I thought the same at first but the date looked like it was skewed away from the rim. Could be a reflection off the coin.

I'll go for DDD too, but these devices are incused, I thought that the effect was opposite when compared to raised devices...

Any thoughts?

It is Machine Doubling. Machine Doubling enlarges the incuse devices. You will never find a DDR on this area. Why? Because these are the single squeeze dies. The DDR will always be in the central areas of the design. None of these will ever be listed. I checked 100 random coins for Machine Doubling on this area of the quarters. 70% showed slight to major Machine Doubling on this area. So don't even look there thinking it is a DDR. They are not found on this area of the dies. (Save your eyes) Move on to the next coins. Look up these DDR's to see where to look for the DDR. (save your eyes) They Won't be there on this design.

The purpose here is education. The more you learn, the less questions you have. Soon you will be helping other new ones. My goal is to help you see on your coin, what I see. When you see that, I know I've reached that goal.
