Fun find for the week. Found this one in a small lot I picked up awhile back. Was actually still intact. The only reason I noticed it was by the hollow sound it made when I tossed it on my desk after checking it for varieties. There was a thin crack around the entire edge, which slight separation. I formed a popsicle stick into a small chisel tip which I used to pop it right apart. Check those edges!

This is one of the coolest Buffalo posts in a while Ty. What kind of premium does this bring if you have both sides? Seems super rare. XF35/40 pre-split?

Wow, just wow, what an incredible find. It looks like the impression of the buffalo (reverse) is a bit more dominate on the interior split was one side a bit heavier than the other. Super awesome display piece, thanks so much for sharing the pictures. Can't be very many mated pairs like this that exist.

I have seen completely split coins like those pictured, with Australian copper nickel coins as well.
Apparently, not just a quality control problem with the US Mint only.

It also must be remembered that blanks are often sourced by Mints from outside suppliers.

Thanks everyone, happy to add it to the collection. I have this one at VF25. The Buffalo nickel series is riddled with lamination issues. Surface laminations being far more common than internal. Majority of the time, just having one half of the split is most common (this goes with most series). Certainly alot less common to have a mated pair. I haven't seen a huge number of them over the years, so definitely the least common of the lamination issues, but as to how many are out there, your guess is as good as mine. Check those edges!
