Hey Everyone!
I picked up this beautifully toned Buffalo nickel the other day. The coin has great overall detail and still has mint luster. However, in some areas of the coin it has particularly weak features. This is very apparent toward the top of the braids. There also appears to be some weakness on the reverse. I have a fantastic Struck Through Grease buffalo example which has some similarities to this coin but that coin doesn't have weakness on both sides and the weakness is much more confined to a specific location.

The coin doesn't appear to be polished so I'm leaning toward this being a weak strike.

Thoughts?

Also, if it is a weak strike do you think this would qualify as MS or does it reside in the XF/AU range? I have the hardest time differentiating between AU and MS Buffalo nickels.

Thanks!

Looks like a combination of strike weakness and Die Deterioration. This example is LDS, which will result in a lack of details/mushy details. The central devices are the most affected by strike weakness, therefore it's very typical to see that weakness in the hair above the braid. This is one PUP to look out for in a well struck example (stronger strike, more hair detail). As for the reverse, the buffalos front left shoulder and head are most commonly affected from strike weakness.

I can't get a good feel of the surfaces from these images, but I'd lean towards AU sharpness.
Rest in Peace
