Hi, I found a penny from 1985 that is a rainbow color, like oil in water. I just was wondering why it is colored like that. Also, the number 5 looks different to me. I am just wanting someone else's opinion on it. sorry, my camera sucks. It's so much more colorful in person.

The toning is caused by exposure to environmental agents which interact with the copper plating--kinda cool. The obverse shows signs of Die Deterioration, as evidenced by the Ridge Ring which passes through IN GOD WE TRUST. The 5 issue may be influenced by Die Deterioration, plating anomalies, and perhaps a circulation hit/smudge.
