So far as I can determine, this is but one of a series of souvenir medals struck in copper (bronze?), but this one appears to be cupronickel in composition. A bit over silver dollar sized. Quite lovely die work. Some references state that the gold showing up in the 49er's pan is a genuine, albeit tiny, gold nugget (apparently glued in place), so I feel fortunate to have found this specimen intact.

Interesting bimetallic token @lc. I see the initials NCM on the reverse to the left, but potentially something else to the right. Were you able to determine whose artwork this is?
