First off: @Jerry Picker: Very nice medal! I always enjoy seeing Swiss Shooting Talers and Medals! For those not very familiar with the Swiss Shooting Festival medals... The piece shown is a medal from the Federal Shooting Festival that was held in Winterthur (in the Zurich Canton) in 1895. It was struck in gold (~50), silver (~5,060) and bronze (~3,700). The piece was designed/engraved by Hans Wildermuth and George Hantz; you can find their names included on the reverse at the bottom. The medal is 45 mm in diameter. The obverse design includes cameo portraits of a female figure on the left (Helvetia?) and a male figure (at right) that flank a wreath; the winged helmet on the unidentified male figure makes me think of Hermes/Mercury of Roman mythology. Within the wreath is depicted a Winterthur scene highlighted by the Stadtkirche Cathedral (two towers) and Reformierte Kirche St. Arbogast (Reformed Church of St. Arbogast) (single tower).
