Pre-1982 (95% copper) cents are not plated. This is just a dark patina (tone) from environmental exposure. Make it a pocket piece and it might form a nice circulation cameo though.

Yes just circulation wear and environmental/chemical exposure on this one. It would be a spender for me.

Environment for sure. Darker ones are called "Black Beauties" some collect them, most don't bother.
