Note the flatness off the devices. These devices were filled with grease. The grease prevented the forming of these devices. Thus they are the normal width, but the grease prevented the tops of the devices to narrow.

The devices are tapered at the tops. Thus they dies are not attached to the coin. Thus they fall off the die and the dies are ready to strike the next planchet:
