silverado, you just made me chuckle. Roma has been posting about his scores from stores across Italy - not Michigan.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Wow! I was in Milan two weeks ago.

I didn't even think of searching out coin shops. Had too much else to do with my girl... such as sightsee, eat at nice restaurants, and consume copious amounts of gelato!

Very entertaining reads about these exchanges happening in my country! Keep them coming!

I also cannot imagine american coins are entering the market here. If dealers are selling to me at €7-8 they aren't importing; those halves must have been here as a part of a collection or a collector's world silver or a stacker taking profit.

Apart from a handful serious collector in Italy who probably buy/trade serious coins from the USA, I bet most of the coins here are originating from relatives in the States sending/leaving dollars (after all, all the Italians who moved in the States left families in the old world) or money left by American soldiers in or after WW2. Then there's definitely souvenirs brought back by travellers who probably found old coins in their change and found them fascinating (I am guilty of that..!).

Hi Joe,

Nice to hear from another collector in Italy. I'm in Rome but originally from the u.s.

I think everything you said is true; I'll only add I think most of the Morgan and Peace dollars I've found were certainly souvenirs or part of someone's collection at some point.

There aren't too many coins that scream as loudly as a "silver dollar".

Best,

R.

Hello Roma2021

I can tell you how two Morgans ended up in my family. Brought from the States as gifts by expats relatives in the 50ies. They choose the dates so they would coincide with the birth years of whom they were gifted to.

Only a 1900 remains in my hands (the 1889 is MIA) and I posted it here: http://goccf.com/t/458365
I wonder if when gifted they were in better conditions..

I also do have a Peace dollar but I don't know the story behind that one.

Cheers!

This morning I was at the Mercatino Filatelico-Numismatico, an open air coin/stamp market near the Duomo square. I was surprised at the size of it. I estimate about 30-40 tables distributed over a few short streets.
Mostly Italian coins but I also noticed other world coins and American coins like Morgan and ASE.
I highly recommend you spend some time at this market on a Sunday morning if you happen to be in Milan.

Thank you for the heads up NumisEd!
Curious -- did you see anyone selling slabbed coins?
Did you buy something?

Cheers

I did not see anyone selling slabbed coins.
At first I was inclined to buy a few 2 euro commemorative, but the lady selling them handled them with "full fingers" so I passed.

Funny to think of all of those coins as "foreign."
