Received in change, best War Nickel I've ever seen. I think it could be MS 65 which would place it way above melt value? Is the vertical line across dome of Monticello on reverse an error, die crack? Edited by jvcv_0 04/16/2023 02:40 am

Yes, that is a die crack on the reverse. They are seen often on War Nickels and, while technically an error, do not add any value to the coin. I can't see the surfaces based on these photos, but am skeptical of MS from this circulation find coin, and I can see hits across the steps so not FS. It is however a well preserved War Nickel and 2x2 worthy. Something else to look for on a 1943-P War Nickel is the overdate 43/42. Check out the last digit in the date and see if yours matches the diagnostics - I can't tell from your photo.

I never heard of an overdate. Based on cursory research I can't tell either, but here's a close up

That photo is way too pixilated to see anything. Sorry but can't help with that image. Here is a PCGS image of the tail of the 2 peeking out from the 3. Do you see this on your coin?

No definitely don't have that tail on the 3.

I agree that even if this grades AU, finding it in the wild is a great deal. Definitely worthy of saving in a 2x2. Well done!

How do you get to ms65?
I'm genuinely curious.
This is au at best and not full steps.
$1-1.50 value

There is another error to look for on the 1943-P, the doubled eye DDO.

$1-1.50 value Melt value alone is 1.43 and condition makes it $10?

Nice find for sure. I'd say AU-55/58.

Quote: First time I find a bona fide die crack and it's worth nada? Sorry - but as I said reverse die cracks are common on all of the War Nickels. If this coin truly were MS with full steps (which it is not) then that die crack would actually considered a negative to most collectors and decrease the coins numismatic value. There are some fun ones though. I once had a relatively high grade 1944-S Jefferson where the die crack bisected the S mint mark vertically to resemble a $ symbol.

Die cracks are merely a 'die event' and usually don't add any value, unless they are spectacular in appearance. Even then, you would need to find a buyer that has interest in coins with die cracks.

Like I said, where do you get MS65 from? I want to see your thought process. No idea where you get $10 from either, this is not worth $10. Nice find in the wild, but let's be realistic and learn properly so you aren't another one of these Etsy deluded people.
