1873 Shield nickel has 2 PCGS varieties for 'open 3', unfortunately FS-1102 has no picture.

Looking at FS-1103 here:

https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...-1103/569426

... has me confused. Looking at the die crack around 4 K, I see where it can be an early FS1103. At 12 K, very faint, it also looks like a very early FS1103. At 7-8 K, I have a very distinct crack but FS1103 does not.

I also noted in that snip from Shield nickel CherryPickers Guide they show a buttload more varieties - so maybe I have one not listed on PGCS?

This 1995 reference has 14 open 3 varieties. No pics though.

This is S1-1004 (F-08) in Spindel's Shield nickel Viewer. It's actually a closed 3.

The NE/SW die scratch near the bottom of the gap between the second and third set of horizontal stripes (among other things) is a perfect match.

Wow. The knowledge base here is amazing.

And what a humbling experience this is. I've had this coin for probably 20 years, and as seen in the pic below I had it tagged as 'closed 3' way back then. Last night, I (incorrectly) re-assessed and (incorrectly) relabeled it as 'open 3' (and added the bad notes regarding FS1103)!
