How would you describe this coin? Given its modest price at a show, I suspect the dealer thought the reverse was damaged. I didn't inquire. I like it!

I don't know anything about Liberty Seated halves but a quick look at Heritage and it appears to be WB-103, or a later state? where the die broke and sunk. The die cracks on WB-103 are exactly the same. As such I'd say variety, not an error.

Edit: this one is about the same die state, with the internal Cud fully formed at the olive leaves and a similar sunken appearance in the same areas.

Thanks, kbbpll .... Looks like you nailed it! I did assume it was a late die state. I should've asked that, considering the minting process as a whole, if the pressman continues to utilize a grossly damaged die, would that constitute a striking error?

I personally don't recall ever seeing such a damaged die being used to strike a coin before. Was this damage the consequence of clashing dies or maybe simply faulted metal in the reverse die?

That is pretty neat and a branch mint as well. Sure looks to me like it was struck with a broken die. I'd bet that the details were not well struck when it was ejected into the hopper, but clearly it also saw plenty of circulation.

Seems like the mint supervisor wouldn't consider it an "error" to squeeze a few more coins out of that poor die!

Are there any coins out there in better condition showing these die cracks? That is something I would love to see..

This coin presented is a very cool looking one.

Click on the links in my post above. Search Heritage archives for "1840-o 50c wb-103" and see a few more in various die states.
